SM Lee: Electing more opposition MPs to check Govt is 'wrong direction'

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong acknowledged on 26 July that the opposition is now a permanent feature of Singapore politics. He said the growing number of opposition Members of Parliament (MP) reflects a growing public desire for alternative voices in Parliament, a sentiment he described as "quite natural" and "quite understandable."

Despite the rise in opposition presence, the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) must continue to perform well and earn voter support to ensure the country’s continued success, he said at a National Day dinner in Serangoon.

Following the 2025 General Election, the 15th Parliament will have 12 opposition MPs, including two Non-Constituency MPs – the same number as in the 2020 General Election. SM Lee stated, "The opposition is here to stay in Singapore politics. But in order for Singapore to keep on doing well, the Government has to continue to hold its own, and to win votes and to win seats in elections."

If the ruling party weakens, it could become more difficult to form teams, govern well, and garner support for policies, he warned.

Singapore Airlines Ltd. said it’s upbeat about travel demand over the peak summer travel period, even as the carrier weathers a slump in profit due to losses at Air India.

The airline’s net income dropped 59% to S$186 million ($145 million) in the three months ended June 30, the carrier said in a statement Monday. That was largely due to the results from Air India, in which it holds a 25.1% stake. Its performance wasn’t part of Singapore Air’s results last year.

LKY continued to draw his Tanjong Pagar GRC MP's allowance until his death in March 2015. I do not know of any 91-year-old who commands that amount of 5-figure payment to be an MP in name only.

Singapore Airlines suffered a 59 per cent drop in profits last quarter as it was hit by losses from its stake in Air India, the carrier embroiled in India’s worst aviation disaster in three decades.

Net profits at Singapore’s national carrier fell from S$266mn ($207mn) to S$186mn compared with the same period last year, the group reported on Monday. It said its losses from associated companies, “notably from Air India’s financial results”, were S$122mn for the three months to the end of June.

Singapore Airlines’ revenue rose 1.5 per cent to S$4.8bn for the quarter, which the group said showed demand for air travel remained strong despite economic and geopolitical uncertainties.

More than 240 passengers and crew died when an Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad in June, leaving a sole survivor.

Global focus has shifted to the roles of the Air India pilots following media reports that the captain may have turned off the plane’s fuel switches shortly after take-off. However, earlier this month, India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau cautioned foreign media against “irresponsible” speculation about the causes of the disaster as the probe continued.

Singapore Airlines acquired a 25 per cent stake in Air India last year after its joint venture with Tata Sons, Vistara, was absorbed in a merger. Tata had bought Air India out of state ownership in 2022.

However, Tata has struggled in its efforts to revamp the flag carrier, which even before the crash had been continually criticised by passengers for poor service and ageing craft.

It also faces aggressive competition at home from India’s now dominant carrier, IndiGo, which enjoys a near two-thirds domestic market share in the country and is steadily increasing its international routes.

Earlier this month, Tata reported that privately held Air India registered an annual loss of Rs108.59bn ($1.25bn) in the year to the end of March 2025, the first time it had published financial details since the full merger with its sister airlines.

Singapore Airlines said it was committed to its Indian business. “Working closely with its longtime partner Tata Sons, the group will continue to support Air India’s ongoing transformation journey,” it said as part of its results.

Elon Musk wants to use AI to run US gov’t, but experts say ‘very bad’ idea

Gov’t use of AI can go wrong in many ways, experts say, including lack of transparency on how tools are trained.

Is Elon Musk planning to use artificial intelligence to run the US government? That seems to be his plan, but experts say it is a “very bad idea”.

Musk has fired tens of thousands of federal government employees through his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and he reportedly requires the remaining workers to send the department a weekly email featuring five bullet points describing what they accomplished that week.

Since that will no doubt flood DOGE with hundreds of thousands of these types of emails, Musk is relying on artificial intelligence to process responses and help determine who should remain employed. Part of that plan reportedly is also to replace many government workers with AI systems.

Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology Tan See Leng said that Singapore needs to acquire the technical expertise so the city-state can ensure its safety.
SINGAPORE - Singapore has to build its capabilities in nuclear energy even though it has not made a decision on its use, as countries in the region have publicly signalled their intent to build such facilities.

Dr Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology, said in an interview on July 21 that the country needs to acquire technical expertise in this area to ensure its safety.

“Our neighbours, the Philippines, Indonesia, have publicly signalled that they intend to build nuclear plants. So, regardless of whether we have made the decision, our neighbours have made the decision,” he said in his first interview in the new portfolio.
