6-year-old boy falls to death from family home

SINGAPORE - A 6-year-old boy who was believed to be left home alone fell to his death this morning at Tampines from his fifth-storey home.

He suffered serious head and leg injuries and died on the spot.

Chinese evening daily Shin Min Daily News reported that the incident happened at this morning at 8.55am, at Tampines St 42, Block 446. The boy, Wang Jin Qian, fell out of the window of his family home's kitchen. He is believed to have climbed up onto a laundry basket and a box to reach the slightly ajar window.

No one else was at home. Neighbours told reporters that the boy's mother had left the house with her elder daughter to buy breakfast, before sending her off to swimming lessons. It was believed that she had also planned to go to the market after that.

The boy's grandfather also headed out of the house at around 8am to for coffee.

As the boy was still asleep, the family did not wake him and left him at home.

Family members who arrived at the scene later declined to be interviewed. The boy's parents, who rushed back after learning of the incident, did not want to comment either.

Police said the boy was pronounced dead at 9.10am, and are investigating as the cause of death was unnatural. Investigators brought back a laundry basket and box from the family's home for further investigations.
