When i heard this story 2 weeks ago, I was intrigued and then realised that is symptomatic of Singapore today but also to recognise the human spirit. Here is the gist

She is a single lady who left school with O levels. In mid-life she left for UK to do a degree and got honours in hospitality. She began working in the UK before returning to look after her ailing father. She managed to secure a job with MBS as a croupier. Most of her colleagues are pinoys, Malaysians and other FTs. She calimed that she was bullied by the pinoys.

Early this year, she leased her flat to an FT family, secured a place in an OZ uni to do her masters as she felt that was the only way to migrate or hope to migrate. She is funding the course from her home rental and hopes to work part time which is allowed in OZ.

I expressed to a friend that I had not heard of someone startin this late in life. He told me that is not main story. He said that the HDB flat is now keeping many Singaporeans alive. Singaporeans are either leasing out rooms or the whole flat. Some of those who leased out their whole flat are renting rooms in the same block to make ends meet. What a country!

I've heard of someone who leases out his parents' flat to foreigners. They serve as unwitting victims of his peeping tom fetishes and source of income for his alternative lifestyle choice.

What you heard is not surprising. An old colleague of mind is in a similar situation. There are probably tens of thousands out there like her in different situations but in a similar vein. How sad and shocking that those who run our country have let this happen. Probably the biggest strategic error by LKY is to pay loyalists - be they civil servants, MPs or ministers - so well that they have lost all touch with ground reality. It can only get worse. If the bozos we have been talking about end up running this country, then so be it.

I worry when they give up their home for which they worked all their lives for only to rent it out when it is time to enjoy it. Thats really sad. The heart must be hurting. I wonder if any sociologist is prepared to llok into this and how bad or widespread this is.

I was very surprised when I read this thread. The problem is known to very few. You really have extraordinary access. You should apply the cohort analysis I did in one of my earlier postings to understand the enormity and when it will ripen.

Good that you brought this up. But the powers that be look but do not see, listen but do not hear.

I personally know of one example, rent out flat, stay with a family member, and use the money to service the installments. Ironically, the person is employed.

Where do you expect the millions of FTs to stay? This renting out of flats leads to Singaporeans staying with their families also and not just renting a room for themselves while their homes are rented out to FTs. Have you also noticed that more game shows on TV have strong undercurrents of gambling involved?

The PAPpies are good at social engineering and lining up their pockets. Taking care of Singaporeans are the least of their issues.
