Posted: 23 February 2012 1812 hrs

SINGAPORE: Traffic Police stopped 52 motorists on Thursday who were suspected to have been drink-driving.

The four-and-a-half-hour island-wide operation took place on Thursday morning.

During the operation, road blocks were set up along Buangkok East Drive, Pasir Ris Drive 3, Whitley Road, Woodlands Avenue 3, New Bridge Road, Church Street, South Bridge Road and North Canal Road to net errant drivers.

Ten motorists including one female failed the breathalyser test and were arrested on the spot for the offence of drink-driving. They are aged between 23 and 48.

The highest breathalyser test result clocked was 69 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, almost two times the prescribed legal limit.

Those convicted will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.

They may lose their driving licences and have to retake the theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain their driving licences again.

In addition, first-time offenders can be fined a maximum of S$5,000, or jailed up to six months.

Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.

They may also be caned up to six strokes should death or serious injury be caused.
