SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 51-year-old man for stealing a bicycle.
On Dec 12 at about 7.45pm, the police received information that a man was trying to sell a bicycle to foreign workers outside Woodlands Dormitory.
Upon seeing the police, the subject abandoned the bicycle and fled on foot. He was arrested after a short chase.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the man had stolen the bicycle earlier and was trying to sell it off to the workers.
Investigations against the subject are ongoing. If found guilty, he may be imprisoned for up to three years, fined, or both.
The police would like to warn the public that one should never buy bicycles from dubious sellers as such bicycles could be stolen or fraudulently obtained.
Bicycle owners are advised to lock their bicycles up when left unattended, even if it is only for a short while, and secure bicycles to permanent structures such as a bicycle rack.
All removable bicycle components should be locked or secured and a sturdy bicycle lock should be used.
A U-lock provides better security compared to cable locks. Owners can also use a bicycle lock with an alarm feature, or affix bicycle security labels available at any neighbourhood police centre.
