SINGAPORE: Traffic Police say 45 traffic offences were committed within school zones in January since the extra demerit point system was implemented at school zones on January 1 this year.

The most number of offences in came from speeding (17 cases) and careless driving (16 cases).

From January 1, an extra demerit point will apply to motorists caught committing offences such as careless driving, beating a red light or inconsiderate driving within school zones.

On Thursday, the media was invited to observe how the Traffic Police conducted their enforcement activities in three school zones in the east, and within 15 minutes, a driver was caught for speeding.

The Traffic Police plan to deploy officers more regularly at school zones during peak hours in the future. - CNA/gn
