42-year-old lift molester arrested

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 42-year-old man who is believed to be responsible for a case of outrage of modesty in a lift.
On Nov 7, 2013 at about 12.45am, police received a report that a 14-year-old girl had been molested in a lift in the Clementi housing estate about two days prior.
A man had entered the lift and molested her as she was exiting the lift. Following the report, officers from the Clementi Police Division immediately conducted extensive ground enquiries and follow-up investigations to apprehend the man.
Through meticulous examination of the CCTV's footage at the lift, the officers managed to establish the identity of the man. He was placed under arrest in the vicinity of Clementi Avenue 2 on Nov 20, 2013 at about 4.50pm.
If convicted, the man shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of not less than three years and not more than 10 years and with caning.
Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Melvin Yong, commended his officers for their good investigative follow-up which led to the arrest of the suspect.
DAC Yong also advises members of public, in particular, lone females, to be vigilant of their surroundings and to adopt the following measures in the event that they encounter similar unfortunate situations with a molester:
• Try to stay composed;
• Take note of the description, attire or any significant features of the perpetuator as much as possible;
• Take note of the direction and mode of escape by the perpetuator; and
• Call the Police as soon as it is safe to do so.
