Democrats say their Tuesday night wave of election victories is a referendum against President Trump.

  • Democrats won races for governor in New Jersey and Virginia, and California voters approved a ballot measure that could cost the GOP as many as five seats in Congress.
  • "Last night, if that wasn't a message to all Republicans, then we've got our heads jammed in the ground," said Sen. Jim Justice, R-West Virginia.
  • President Trump attacked New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani as "a communist."
  • California Republicans sued to stop Proposition 50, which voters approved by a wide margin Tuesday night. The measure will redraw Congressional maps, hurting the GOP.
After riding high for months, President Donald Trump saw MAGA zeal collide with a growing backlash that helped deliver a wave of Democratic election victories, setting the stage for a big 2026 midterm clash.

Democrats swept statewide contests in Virginia, New Jersey, California and Pennsylvania and racked up victories in lower profile races, leaving party leaders jubilant and eager to declare the election a referendum on Trump.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the results are a "repudiation of the Trump agenda." The president, meanwhile, blamed the government shutdown and the fact that he wasn't on the ballot.

A former Trump campaign advisor said the president would shift his focus to the economy and affordability in 2026, even as Democrats saw the cost of living as a winning issue in next year's mid-term elections.

Trump loomed large over the Nov. 4 contests, the first big test of voter sentiment since he won every swing state and the popular vote in 2024. The outcome couldn't have been better for Democrats.

Democrats Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey won races for governor by wide margins in states where Trump made gains in 2024, and California voters resoundingly approved a ballot measure aimed at checking Trump's efforts to create more Republican-leaning congressional seats.

The party saw a slate of new leaders emerge, most notably 34-year-old New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who energized young voters with a progressive agenda that drew Trump's ire.

The Democratic romp came as Trump's approval rating sags and 61% of voters in a new CNN/SSRS poll blamed Trump for the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Trump Melts Down as Republicans Suffer Massive Losses Everywhere

Donald Trump posted his way through his party’s humiliating losses.

President Donald Trump’s seen the election results—and he’s pissed at Republicans.

After Zohran Mamdani was officially elected mayor of New York City Tuesday night, sounding the death knell for Republicans’ election prospects nationwide, Trump refused to take any responsibility for the GOP’s failure.

“‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump’s name may not have been on the ballot, but his presence was felt as Democrats executed stunning victories in elections in Georgia and Virginia, where the ongoing government shutdown has significantly shaken the economy.

Plagued by seemingly endless electoral disaster, Trump turned his attention to something he could actually be proud of: his television ratings.

“JUST OUT: The 60 Minutes interview of Donald J. Trump, on CBS, Sunday night, was the highest rated 60 Minutes IN YEARS!” Trump wrote. The president’s interview Sunday had been edited to exclude a lengthy rant he gave about his own apparent corruption.

It seems that Trump then decided he had marching orders for embattled Republicans, writing: “REPUBLICANS, TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER! GET BACK TO PASSING LEGISLATION AND VOTER REFORM! President DJT”

“Pass Voter Reform, Voter ID, No Mail-In Ballots. Save our Supreme Court from ‘Packing,’ No Two State addition, etc. TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER!!!” he wrote in another post.

After spending weeks singularly blaming Democrats for the congressional stalemate over the ongoing government shutdown, Trump had turned to ordering Republicans to “INITIATE THE ‘NUCLEAR OPTION’” by axing the Senate filibuster. The directive adds monumental pressure on Republicans, who have previously fought to maintain the filibuster, which grants significant power to the Senate’s minority.

Trump wasn’t the only one having a hard time coping—MAGA Republicans had their own social media meltdown Tuesday.

New York new mayor immediately begs for money after the election-win
never really had a real job like us

Mamdani is a Democratic Socialist, by his own admission.

Communists don't believe in democracy. All communist states are single party authoritarian states. So how can Mamdani be a communist? Duh...

Trump and most Americans of his ilk don't understand what socialism is - they always conflate it with communism. That's why the US is so screwed up.

If you want to know what democratic socialism is, look at the Nordic countries. They're all far ahead of the US on practically all social and economic indicators, in addition to having much lower crime rates as well.

LOL... Stepping stone? Have Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland stepped on that 'stone', ditched democracy and elections, and turned communist?

Did Mamdani come into power via a violent revolution or coup, was he elected democratically? Duh...

Go have your brain examined.

Haven't answered my question, idiot. Are the Nordic countries democratic, or communist?

"Marx’s View: Socialism as a Transition to Communism

Karl Marx (along with Friedrich Engels) saw socialism and communism as two stages of the same revolutionary process:

  1. Socialism (the first stage):
    • After a revolution, the working class (proletariat) would take control of the state.
    • The government would own and manage resources and industries on behalf of the people.
    • There would still be a state, some form of money, and rules to organize production and distribution.
    • The goal was to end capitalist exploitation and create economic equality.
  2. Communism (the final stage):
    • Once class divisions disappeared and people worked cooperatively, the state would “wither away.”
    • There would be no private property, no social classes, and no need for money or government.
    • Society would operate on the principle:
“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”

Just shows how shallow your understanding of political philosophies is. Certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Marx was hijacking socialism as a tool to implement totalitarian communism. He was never acquainted with democracy, much less democratic socialism. Russia, like China, had never had any experience with democracy prior to the Bolshdevik.

Let me teach you what democratic socialism is, which is world apart from Marxist socialism:

From the DSA:
Democratic socialism is a system where ordinary people have a real voice in our workplaces, neighborhoods, and society.

We believe there are many avenues that feed into the democratic road to socialism. Our vision pushes further than historic social democracy and leaves behind authoritarian visions of socialism in the dustbin of history.

We want a democracy that creates space for us all to flourish not just survive and answers the fundamental questions of our lives with the input of all. We want to collectively own the key economic drivers that dominate our lives, such as energy production and transportation. We want the multiracial working class united in solidarity instead of divided by fear. We want to win “radical” reforms like single-payer Medicare for All, defunding the police/refunding communities, the Green New Deal, and more as a transition to a freer, more just life.

We want a democracy powered by everyday people. The capitalist class tells us we are powerless, but together we can take back control.

--------
So which part of 'democracy' don't you understand?
