SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 26-year-old man and a 17-year-old woman responsible for committing a series of theft from vehicles in Jurong West housing estate.

The 26-year-old man is also believed to be involved in a case of Robbery with Hurt at Yung An Road together with two other men, aged 21 and 23 respectively. Both accomplices have also been arrested.

From August to September 2013, police received at least seven reports of theft from vehicles in Jurong West housing estate.

In these cases, cash cards and other valuables were stolen from motor lorries that were parked unattended and left unsecured by the victims.

Separately, on Aug 29, 2013 at about 1.30am, a man was walking along Yung An Road when the three men assaulted and robbed him of his mobile phone and wallet before fleeing away on bicycles.

Following the reports, officers from the Jurong Police Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and managed to establish the identities of the suspects. The four were arrested on Sep 9, 2013 in a successful police operation.

Two mobile phones and four bicycles, which are believed to be stolen items, were recovered after the arrests.

If convicted, the three men could face a minimum imprisonment term of five years and a maximum imprisonment term of 20 years, and shall also be punished with caning with not less than 12 strokes.

If convicted, the woman faces an imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and shall also be liable to a fine.

Commander of Jurong Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Wilson Lim commended his officers for the excellent collaboration, perseverance and high standard of investigative probe which led to the successful arrests of the suspects.

As uunattended valuables pose as easy targets to would-be culprits, DAC Wilson Lim reminds members of the public not to leave their valuables unattended or exposed inside their vehicles and to secure their vehicles at all times.
