By Kimberly Spykerman
POLICE arrested 38 people for suspected involvement in loansharking activities in an 18-hour raid, which ended early this morning.
The suspects - 28 men and 10 women - are aged between 19 and 75. They were picked up in areas that included Ang Mo Kio, Bedok , Hougang, Sembawang and Jalan Bukit Merah.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are believed to have facilitated unlicensed moneylending activities by opening bank accounts and giving away their ATM cards and PIN passwords to the loansharking syndicates. Investigations are ongoing.
First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the carrying on of the business of an unlicensed moneylender can be jailed four years, caned six strokes, and fined between $30,000 and $300,000.
Acting Commander of Central Police Division and Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Adrian Quek said that the police will continue to clamp down hard on loansharking activities.
