An unlicensed food caterer, was charged in court today for preparing and supplying food for a private function, making 38 persons ill with diarrhoea and vomiting.
On December 24, 2010 Mr Liau Tiak Guan prepared and delivered the food in aluminium trays to an event at Kum Yan Woodlands Methodist Church at Blk 52 Woodlands Street 13.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) is yet to confirm the actual cause of the food poisoning.
In a written statement the NEA said it's investigations show the food was delivered without proper temperature control equipment to keep the food out of the temperature danger zone - 5 deg C to 60 deg C.
When food is kept at danger zone temperatures, food pathogens - which causes diseases - will multiply rapidly.
Mr Liau was operating under the name of Robert Catering Services, from his home.
The NEA also found evidence of large scale food preparation activities - big woks, large frying pans, two gas cylinders and food ingredients - at Mr Liau's home.
All cooking equipment have since been confiscated.
If convicted Mr Liau could face fines of $1,000 upon the first conviction, and $4,000 and/or imprisonment of 3 months upon the second and subsequent convictions.
Before engaging any catering services, the public is advised to check NEA's website for the list of licensed food caterers http://app2.nea.gov.sg/ListOfLicencees.aspx.
