A MAN, who punched, kicked and used a motorcycle helmet to hit two bouncers of the once popular Devil's Bar, was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in jail and four strokes of the cane on Thursday.
Mohamed Jeffery Abdullah, 36, pleaded guilty to being a member of an unlawful assembly that assaulted Mr Jeganathan Suppiah, 29, and Mr Vijayan Arumugam, 28 at 4.40am on Mar 16, 2006. The victims suffered cuts and bruises.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Ashraf Hassan told the district court that Mohamed Jeffery failed to turn up for court proceedings and went into hiding for four years. The odd-job worker was only arrested on Sept 2 2010, after a spot check of his family's home in Commonwealth Drive.
In court, he admitted to having gathered with 14 other men outside the Devil's Bar in Orchard Parade Hotel. When they were asked to pay the cover charge to go in, the group set upon the two bouncers. Police arrived and arrested five attackers while the rest got away.
A charge of rioting in 2000 in Coleman Street in the early hours of Sept 15, 2000, was taken into consideration by the judge when sentencing Mohamed Jeffery.
The other four accomplices have been dealt with. Kamaruzaman Abu Bakar, 45, was sentenced in May 2007, to two years and eight months in jail and six strokes of the cane, while Ahmad Luthfi Imran, 26, was fined $1,000. Sufian Ahmad and Shaifudin, both 30, received police warnings. Devil's Bar closed down in March 2007.
