32 Muslim individuals were detained in Johor after allegedly being caught drinking alcohol during New Year's Eve celebrations.
A Facebook post on Jan. 2, 2026, by the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) announced the enforcement by its officers.
The 32 arrested included 25 men and seven women, between the ages of 18 and 45.
Of these, 26 are Malaysians, while six are Singaporeans.
Most of those arrested were not from Johor and had come there for some revelry.
The individuals were caught at an entertainment centre at around 3 am. They were transported in enforcement trucks to wait for further legal actions.
According to the post, those detained will be charged under Section 19 for consuming alcoholic beverages.
That offence carries a fine of up to RM3,000 (S$953), a jail term of up to two years, or both.
The post also described parents and close relatives bailing them out, being in tears and unable to believe what happened.
