The PA has long become the ‘grassroots branch’ of the PAP to serve its own selfish partisan interests and not that of Singaporeans. It is headed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and five other PAP MPs.
Only Prime Minister Lee has the authority to appoint advisers to the grassroots organizations under the PA and this provides a ‘backdoor’ route for losing PAP candidates in the election to retake the constituency in the future, as epitomized by the case of Sitoh Yih Pin.
The PAP only enjoys the support of 60% of Singaporeans and as such how is the PA which is controlled by the PAP, able to achieve ‘One People, One Singapore’?
The Elected President is a more suitable person to head the PA for the following reasons:
1. The Elected President is elected by the entire nation and therefore has the moral authority to chair and lead the People’s Association while PM Lee is only voted into parliament as a MP by residents of Ang Mo Kio GRC and was appointed as PM by consensus within the PAP.
2. The Elected President is not a member of any political party and can claim to represent the entire nation whereas PM Lee is the Secretary-General of the PAP.
3. Being an apolitical office, the Elected President will be able to rise above party politics and not get entangled in petty politicking like what is happening now between PAP and WP.
As such, Singaporeans need an Elected President who is clearly independent of the PAP and has the moral courage to stand up to the PAP to fight for the transfer of the PA to the Istana which is long overdue.
With mounting pressure from the public coupled with a proactive President who dares to speak up for Singaporeans, the PAP will be forced to give serious consideration to the proposal or at least give some concessions to appease the public.
