KAOHSIUNG--Three men were detained and four others were released on bail Monday after allegedly trying to smuggle nearly 230 kilograms of heroin into Taiwan.
A Kaohsiung district court granted a prosecutor's request to detain Weng Yung-sheng and two other men after they were questioned overnight.
The seven men have been accused of attempting to smuggle heroin worth up to NT$9 billion (US$304.6 million), making it the biggest drug bust in Taiwan in 20 years.
Weng, 54, and his accomplices were arrested after investigators, working on information gathered through wiretaps, used sniffer dogs to detect the drugs hidden inside imported stereo loudspeakers at Taoyuan International Airport early Sunday morning.
A total of 600 heroin bricks were discovered in 12 speakers imported from Vietnam.
