TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) on Wednesday busted a cross-strait fraud ring, nabbing 26 suspects after six months of investigation.
The CIB said that it received a tip-off in May that a suspicious individual had been regularly drawing cash with UnionPay Cards in Kaohsiung.
A task force, consisting of members of the CIB and Kaohsiung City Police, was subsequently set up and engaged in tracking and surveillance. The task force discovered that the fraud ring, headed by a man surnamed Fu, had set up shop in Taichung, defrauding mainland Chinese residents over the phone by pretending to be mainland Chinese police.
Investigators said that the suspects attempted to avoid arrest by relocating their operations on a periodic basis.
On Wednesday, a law enforcement force of 70 was mobilized, arresting a total of 26 suspects, three of which were minors who were later transferred over the juvenile court.
