GEORGE TOWN: A 24-year-old man was found hacked to death behind a house in Lebuh Rambai 16, Air Itam, here and his friend was left seriously injured.
G. Surintheran was rushed to the Penang Hospital at about 6pm Saturday after residents called the police but he died a short while later.
His friend was admitted to a private hospital where his condition has been described as stable. The deceased, who lived in Bayan Lepas, was slashed on his head, arms and back.
Witnesses had earlier seen the two of them being chased by a group of parang-wielding men through the area.
Police believe that the two were also shot at but the gunman apparently missed. Two 9mm-calibre casings were found near the scene. The motive of the attack has yet to be ascertained.
An 18-year-old youth has since been picked up in connection with the case, which has been classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng confirmed the case but declined to elaborate as investigations were still pending.
Police are trying to determine if the case was connected to the recent incidents in Bukit Jambul, where a four-year-old boy was shot in the leg and in Kampung Ujong Batu, Butterworth, where a youth, 19, died after being shot thrice.
On Thursday, a teacher was shot dead when he stopped his car at a traffic light junction in Keladi here. K. Shanmugam, 45, died on the spot after being shot at least nine times on his body by a man who was riding pillion on a motorcycle.
The shooting cases could be due to rivalry between two gangs in the state.
