SINGAPORE — A Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) full-time National Serviceman was killed in a vehicular incident at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Queensland, Australia at 6.15pm on Friday (Sept 15) night.

Third Sergeant (3SG) Chan Hiang Cheng Gavin, 21, was a Vehicle Commander from the 41st Battalion Singapore Armoured Regiment.

He was travelling in a Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicle as part of Exercise Wallaby when the incident occurred. Exercise Wallaby, now into its 27th year, is an annual millitary exercise involving the Singapore Armed Forces armour units and the Republic of Singapore Air Force.

An SAF medic commenced resuscitation efforts on 3SG Chan, who was then unconscious.

He was then evacuated via a helicopter to Rockhampton Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at around 10.36pm.

A statement from the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said that an investigation of the incident is ongoing. It also added that a safety pause on training in Shoalwater Bay Training Area has taken effect.

"The Ministry of Defence and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late serviceman and are assisting the family in this time of grief," Mindef said.

Deepest condolences to his family...

Why are we training our NSmen in Australia bush?

We have similar forested landscape in Singapore?

VC died? High chance vehicle overturns. Not a pretty sight.

Rest in peace.

Was wondering if the narrow width and high CG of Bionix make it prone to overturn?

Real sad, 21 yrs, a few months to go. I also note the ability to ape the Americans instantly - "safety pause".

Why does the VC need to ride with half his body outside the armoured vehicle? In this day and age, shouldn't it be possible for the VC to navigate the vehicle from within the safety of the tank? Also in conflict, riding with half his body outside the vehicle makes him a target for snipers.

That was what I was thinking too, vehicle overturn. I guess their over turn drills not practiced enough. But I thought the terrain was pretty flat. Oh well.

That is a good question. Overturn is more of a function of the terrain then anything else. even M1 Abrams can overturn if traveling at high speed over hilly terrain. There is a way to drive the terrain to minimize this. Maybe this chap was not familiar with the terrain. But there are overturn drills that are quite effective. Its dependent on his reaction time too.

Poor chap, RIP. Want to report the incident and yet no details of this "vehicular incident". The hatch probably closed on him hard, crushed his head.

Xijinping should donate 1 coffin inside each Terrex returned to SG53. Inside each vehicle can have space to put coffin.

Sometimes, the hatch does not close. Then half his body is inside the Bionix and the other half is pinned to the ground. Crushed to death. There is a lot of these sort of incidents involving AMX-13s in the SAF.

OK, but I wasn't even factoring in an overturned Bionix scenario. :D

BTW, you should update your Location. You don't want to be Con You's room-mate

There is a hatch pin to secure the hatch but not sure it can withstand the 23tons BX weight.

Must have been a top secret exercise...this incident not even mentioned over the Australian national news network.

At least this chap died in service,,his insurance pay out etc will help his family,,,better than a lot of ppl,,die already also no one cares,,,,and much better than that disabled navy man. Which was used as a pappie political tool and thrown away like a used toilet paper,,,,and that navy chap by being alive is a burden to his family and his quality of life is shit..he would have been better of dead

Exercise Wallaby is commonly known to residents of Rockhampton. Probably MINDEF PR has a standing arrangement with the local press not to cover these sort of incidents.

This is the price to pay for being a sinkie male. RIP Gavin. Daft & humji sinkies won't give a shit about your death. They will only shed tears for Lee Kuan Yew.
