21 killed in factory riots in Vietnam - incduding 16 Chinese - Nationals

HANOI: Five Vietnamese workers and 16 others, believed to be Chinese nationals, reportedly died on Wednesday night during anti-China riots in Vietnam.

A doctor at Ha Tinh General Hospital, which is located in central Vietnam’s Ha Tinh province, said about a hundred people were sent to the hospital on Wednesday night, and many were Chinese.

Separately, one Chinese worker was reported killed in rioting at a Taiwanese steel plant in Ha Tinh province.

"One Chinese worker is dead. We are trying to identify the body," a local policeman told AFP on condition of anonymity.

According to Taiwanese media, the plant is owned by Formosa Plastics Group, Taiwan's biggest investor in Vietnam.

Protesters have set more than a dozen factories on fire in south Vietnam, in anger over China’s deployment of an oil rig in contested waters.

The violence has forced some factories in the southeast province of Binh Duong to temporarily suspend operations.

According to police in Binh Duong, 460 companies reported some damage to their plants.

By the end of 2013, there were 1,219 operational Singaporean-invested projects capitalized at more than US$29 billion, making the island nation second among foreign investors in Vietnam.

Vietnamese businesses also poured nearly US$35.7 million into Singapore, raising their total investment there to nearly US$185 million.

They could be instigated by left/right wing political agitators. I am guessing here. The idea is to destabilize the authority by causing unrest and using the moment's heightened emotions to achieve this outburst of pent-up feelings to target Chinese businesses. I am not familar with Vietnamese politics, but this case may be just a reaction to the chinese oil rig in Vietnamese claimed territory and may not have any internal agenda. Maybe could also be opportunist business competitors. Don't really know.
