The Honourable Artillery Company have fired a 21-gun salute from Tower Bridge to mark the Diamond
Jubilee. Troops fired the ceremonial guns from the waterfront of the Tower of London to celebrate the
coronation in a traditional sign of respect.
The firing of the guns is a traditional symbol of peace, indicating the friendly intent of an empty chamber.
The number of rounds fired in a salute depends on the place and occasion.
The basic Royal salute is 21 rounds, an extra 20 may be added if the occasion is being marked in a royal
palace or park, and another 21 may be added if it falls within the City of London.
