A court in Hanoi on Wednesday sentenced two local men to prison for filming traffic police officers taking bribes from violators and using the video to blackmail them.
Vuong Quoc Long, 25, received a 30-month jail term while his 35-year-old accomplice Vu Xuan Hien got 24 months after the court found them guilty of extortion.
According to the indictment, Long secretly filmed a group of policemen at some checkpoints in Hanoi for several days in January. He then made a 13-minute video featuring multiple bribery scenes.
Accompanied by Hien, Long met the officers and showed them the video on February 3. They demanded VND150 million, around US$6,700.
Police later arrested the two while they were taking the money from the officers.
Investigators said the duo in 2014 had earned VND70 million ($3,200) from a similar blackmail scheme in the northern province of Tuyen Quang.
The court on Wednesday said punitive measures against the corrupt traffic officers will be considered later by their departments.
