SINGAPORE: Two men, who were awaiting court proceedings to be settled, broke the law again while out of court.

Muhammad Yusri Ramli, 21, who did not have a motorcycle driving licence, had stolen two motorcycles and was nabbed and charged in court.

After he had pleaded guilty to his offences, he asked the judge to adjourn the sentencing for him to settle some private matters.

What the judge did not know was that Muhammad Yusri's way of settling 'private matters' involved stealing another motorcycle and taking it for a joy ride.

On Thursday, Yusri was jailed 36 months and fined S$1,400.

He was also disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles for five years.

District Judge Eddy Tham said sternly: "Settling personal matters does not include stealing a motorcycle for a joy-ride."

The judge also told him to make use of the training opportunities in jail to upgrade and get a proper job after his release.

Another unrepentant culprit also landed in court after committing a cheating offence while out on bail.

Iskandar Mohamed, 25, had driven a rental car on Apr 8, last year, without a licence and tried to evade policemen when he faced a roadblock.

He abandoned the car at a multi-storey carpark where the police found a parang with a 30cm long blade in the car boot.

Iskandar was unable to give a satisfactory explanation for keeping the parang in the car. The unemployed man was charged in court in July.

While out on bail, he pretended to be a house owner who was renting out his flat and signed a tenancy agreement with an unsuspecting victim, collecting a total of S$1,850 from the man.

The victim later discovered the fraud when Iskandar delayed handing over the keys and avoided his phone calls. He then called the police.

On Thursday, Iskandar was jailed 10 months, given six strokes of the cane and fined S$800.

He was also disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles for a year.
