TWO elderly women were robbed in seperate incidents when they let a thief who posed as an electrical worker into their homes. In the first case, a man who claimed to be an electrician went into a flat at Block 805 King George's Avenue and robbed a 75-year-old woman of about $100 worth of coins on Tuesday at around 2pm. The victim was told by the thief at the door that he needed to check on the electrical circuits of her flat as some faults had been reported. She then led him into her flat and was told to check the lights in different rooms while he roamed around.
The suspect left about 20 minutes later. The victim only discovered that the coins, kept in a bowl, were missing at 8pm later that day. In the second case, a 77-year-old woman was robbed of her costume jewellery by a man who also claimed to be checking the power supply in her home. The incident happened on Wednesday at around 1.30pm. He had earlier entered the flat at Block 44 Bendemeer Road uninvited while the victim was tending to her plants along the corridor. She later went into the flat and found him checking the light switches in the master bedroom. He refused to show any identification when asked by the victim and left the house. She later spotted the man carrying her jewellery box and gave chase, but lost sight of him.
The man is said to be in his 40s, 1.75m tall and slim built. He was wearing a light green striped t-shirt and black pants. Police are investigating if the two cases are related. According to the police, there were 22 such cases in 2008. From January to June, nine cases have been reported. Victims are usually above 65, and were alone when the culprits struck. Anyone with information on the two cases can call the police hotline on 1800-255-0000.
