SINGAPORE: The 1st Commando Battalion has done it again, scooping up the Best Combat Unit award at the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Best Unit Competition for the 14th consecutive year.

It has won the award 31 times since the introduction of the competition in 1969, an unprecedented feat for any unit, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said in a press release on Wednesday (Jun 28).

In total, 18 active units and 11 National Service (NS) units have been recognised in the awards for being the best in their respective formations.

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)’s RSS Steadfast clinched the Best Fleet Unit award, while the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF)’s 143 Squadron won the Best Fighter Squadron award.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen will present the awards to the winners at the SAF Day Parade on Saturday.


"Trained to operate deep within enemy territory, the SAF Commandos are renowned for their proficiency in specialised operations such as airborne operations, reconnaissance and raid missions," MINDEF said of the 1st Commando Battalion.

The battalion's commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Ng Kiang Chuan, said the commanders and soldiers were adaptive to challenging situations.

"The effective training and values of professionalism, fighting spirit, and discipline cultivated in every commando have helped in a big way. We must continue to carry with us the commandos’ identity, in serving with a sense of purpose and ownership of our duty to the nation."

The RSS Steadfast, which won the Best Fleet Unit award for the first time, demonstrated "high operational readiness and excellent naval warfare competencies through its participation in numerous operations and exercises, such as Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC)", MINDEF said.

The ship's commanding officer, LTC Edwin Chen, attributed the achievement to his crew’s hard work and professionalism towards their mission.

"RSS Steadfast was the first non-US ship to lead a Multinational Group Sail for Exercise RIMPAC 2016, and successfully planned and executed surface warfare for 10 other ships as the Task Force Anti-Surface Warfare Commander. These achievements would not have been possible, if not for the crew’s competence and professionalism.”

While the 143 Squadron picked up the Best Fighter Squadron in 1989 and 1990, this year's win is the squadron's first while flying the F-16C/D multi-role fighter aircraft. It flew the A-4SU Super Skyhawk fighter jet the last two times, MINDEF said.

The squadron "conducts a wide spectrum of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, and maintains a high state of operational readiness to defend Singapore's skies", it added.

LTC Ong Teck Koon, 143 Squadron's commanding officer, said every air and ground crew member in his team "constantly strives to push boundaries and to achieve higher standards whether in flying operations, maintenance, or day-to-day administration".

"This year's win is attributable to the commitment and effort that everyone has put into every aspect of our work," he added.

I agree. I think that the best combat unit should be awarded the coveted prize of fighting ISIS in Marawi. Our Commandos could teach a thing or two about fighting to those pathetic pinoys.

THE crack Commando unit has been barred from competing for one of the military's top honours because of cheating involving record-keeping and fitness scores.

Several personnel from the 1st Commando Battalion are also facing disciplinary action.

This is believed to be the first time a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) unit has been booted out of the competition for the Best Combat Unit award. It is a major blow to the Commandos, who hold the record for having won the annual award 17 times, since the contest started in 1969.

The battalion last won it in 2001. Last year, it was edged out of the top spot by the 40th Singapore Armoured Regiment. The red berets' bid to reclaim the honours, given out every year during SAF Day celebrations on July 1, ended late last year.

In response to The Straits Times' queries, the Defence Ministry (Mindef) yesterday confirmed that irregularities were uncovered in late 2002 in the logistics or storekeeping records of one of the sub-units of 1st Commando Battalion. There were also discrepancies in the individual fitness test scores reported by two of the unit's specialists, who handle the stores.

A ministry spokesman said: 'The SAF takes a serious view of such matters. As a result, the unit was disallowed from participating in the Best Unit Competition for the year. This is to uphold the integrity and high standards of the competition.' Disciplinary action is being taken against the individuals concerned.

Word of the Commandos' ban has been making its rounds in defence-linked Internet chatrooms.

It is believed that storekeepers, who are tasked with managing all supplies from light bulbs to spare tyres, doctored some paperwork to account for missing items.

Army inspectors unmasked the cover-up during a logistics readiness inspection at the battalion. The inspection, which assess the level of competence of storekeepers in SAF units, is part of the selection process in the best-unit competition.

The year-long assessment also grades SAF units on matters like battle readiness, administrative efficiency, marksmanship, manpower issues and the way the unit handles security matters.

The unit with the highest overall score receives the Best Combat Unit trophy from the President during the SAF Day parade on July 1. The winning unit also gets to safeguard the SAF Colours - a top honour reserved for the best unit in the SAF.

The 1st Commando Battalion, based at Hendon Camp near Changi Point, has traditionally been regarded as the leading contender for the trophy because some of the fittest and most motivated national servicemen are selected for commando training.

if kurdish forces can have their ypj units in the frontline, why can't saf form spg units and throw them into battle? anyway, ypj sniper here deserves a medal for taking out several isis terrorists in the raqqa battle. and a counter sniper bullet barely misses her head.

IPPT & SOC scores of the units. like that commando already advantage as most other units HQ company men mostly not fit type.

then there is annual logistics inspection scores known as LRI. So the unit with smallest logistics tail confirm advantage. Armour most disadvantage as each vehicles also have a long SOP list of stores to inspect in addition to the CQ store. Armour list of crew served weapons and individual small arms is also the largest in SAF. A combat team armskote will have at least 20+ GPMGs and 20+ coxial MGs. Not to mention the CIS HMGs, 40AGLs, recoilless rifles etc etc.. The more the items, the higher chance of having faults.

last but not least, there the annual evalutation test where each units are put thru the paces in the field. in armour, getting battlion vehicles refuel and resupplies in the field plus vehicle repair (ie. vehicle throw tracks) and recovery in the field within a limited timeframe are part of the assessment. we havent even start on the chiong sua part yet.

Not i want to put down the commandos but the annual best unit is for them to lose only as being elite light infantry do give them big advantages.

That is why I never understand this award...it's soo stack up against other units that only commandos can win...it's like those media corpse awards...

My time in NS revealed to me that most other units are slack. Ok. War experience aside (does not apply to any unit in Sg), the commando soldiers have a higher level of intelligence than most other soldiers. Things like falling in quickly, presentation, teamwork, most other units , with the exception of SAF Boys, can be quite disappointing, even embarrassing sometimes. Take my hats off to the 1st Battalion Commandoes, they are good. And deserve the award.

look good in the parade square do not mean good soldier.

i dunno now still the case but during the 90s, SAF promote Thinking Soldiers. So a Good Thinking Soldier must be one that use the least efforts to get the maximum result.

The main recognition of a military unit is Battle Honour (Europe)/ Presidential Unit Citation ,Campaign streamers(US) which are awarded as official acknowledgement for their achievements in specific wars or operations of a military campaign. These honours usually take the form of a place and a date.What battle honour has this commando unit won?

I do not know if SPF has an eqv-otherwise it will say Hampshire Road ,8 December 2013 ?

Can count Changi, 27 March 1991 ? -as those involved were awarded the Medal for Valour ?

speaking of cheating I once had an army mate who was from guards tell me how the commandoes cheated. They were having some friendly firing competition involving fake fire arms and some type of armour that would light up if the laser beam from the firearms hit them as in it was counted as they had been shot. What occurred was that the guards armour had been tampered with so they always lit up and either the guards guns or commandos armour couldn't light up even when hit so it was a case of cheating and this resulted in an all out brawl between guards and commandos and friend told me his oc or co got his front teeth knocked out by some rifle butt. Related to me 3rd hand but don't believe it to be false.
