SINGAPORE: 19 people were arrested for drink-driving in an operation conducted by Traffic Police which ended early Friday morning.
More than 100 police officers were deployed in the four-and-a-half hour operation in areas such as Ang Mo Kio, Jurong, Tampines and Woodlands.
The breathalyser test was administered to 97 motorists.
Nineteen - 17 men and 2 women - failed the test and were arrested.
The highest breathalyser result clocked was 82 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, more than twice the prescribed legal limit.
In addition, 46 motorists were also found to have driven under the influence of alcohol although they were within the legal limit.
These motorists are still liable for an offence of drink driving if they are deemed to be unable to control their vehicles properly.
The Traffic Police advises motorists not to take chances during the Lunar New Year celebrations.
If convicted, drink drivers will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.
These motorists will have to undergo the theory and practical tests in order to get their driving licences again.
In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000, or jailed up to 6 months.
Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
They may also receive up to six strokes of the cane.
