SINGAPORE - The Traffic Police arrested a total of 18 motorists for drink-driving in an island-wide operation conducted on Tuesday morning.

Various road blocks were set up at various parts of Singapore in a pre-dawn operation.

Police said that 76 drivers were tested for alcohol consumption. Out of these, 18 men, aged between 29 and 48, were arrested for drink-driving.

The highest Breath Evidential Analyser (BEA) test result was 110 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, which is more than triple the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

Drink drivers, upon conviction, will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months. In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, while repeat offenders may be fined up to $30,000 and face a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
