17-year-old youth arrested for suspected housebreaking

SINGAPORE - Police yesterday arrested a 17-year-old youth suspected to be involved in a case of housebreaking in the vicinity of Ulu Pandan Road.
A resident in a private apartment near Ulu Pandan Road told police at 2.50am today that he had spotted an intruder in his house. The police conducted a search and managed to locate and detain the suspect at about 4am.
The suspect will be charged in court tomorrow for housebreaking. If convicted, he could be sentenced up to 3 years imprisonment, and may also be fined.
Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Melvin Yong encouraged home owners to safe-guard their premises by ensuring that the main doors and windows are properly secured with strong grilles and good quality locks.
Police also advised all home occupants to adopt the following crime prevention measures:
- Make sure that all doors, windows and other openings are properly secured with strong grilles and good quality close-shackled locks. Change the lock promptly if the key is lost or stolen;
- Secure all doors and window grills before retiring to bed or when leaving your home unattended, even for a short while;
- Do not leave large sums of cash in your premises. Jewellery and valuable items should be kept in a bank or a good quality safe;
- Avoid leaving valuables such as wallets, bags, cash, mobile phones, and laptops near the window along the common corridor;
- If going away for a prolonged period, suspend the newspaper subscription and arrange for someone to clear mails and check on your home regularly.
