<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->THE former employer of Indonesian maid Badingah, whose two front teeth were forcibly pulled out, was jailed 17 months yesterday.
Elsa Elyana Said, 25, and self-employed, pleaded guilty last month to abetting teenage 'dentist' Nur Rizan Mohamed Sazali in extracting the maid's teeth and punching her.
The abuse took place in a flat in Jalan Minyak, off Chin Swee Road.
Nur Rizan, 18, is serving 26 months' jail for pulling the maid's teeth out, as well as for pouring boiling wax on her head.
Her brother, Mr Muhammad Iz'aan, 20, was released on Tuesday after having served two months for caning Ms Badingah, 29.
The siblings' mother, Maselly Abdul Aziz, 38, is facing trial next month for maid abuse and criminal intimidation. Elsa, listed as Ms Badingah's employer, was living with Maselly and her children.
The court heard that shortly after the maid started working in that household, she was accused of stealing cash and other small valuables. She denied doing so but was not believed. This was when the abuse began.
Between June 2 and July 26, Elsa punched her for not having asked for permission to bathe. The extraction happened when she denied stealing various items. Nur Rizan did it with a pair of pliers and Elsa aided her.
The maid has since had new teeth fitted for free by Dr Steven Ang.
Yesterday, District Judge Jill Tan told Elsa off for letting the teen commit the atrocity. She noted that Elsa, who has a one-year-old daughter, had committed numerous thefts before and so would have been 'clearly familiar with the consequences of breaking the law'. She agreed with Deputy Public Prosecutor Natalie Morris that a stiff sentence was necessary to signal that such behaviour is not tolerated by the courts.
