17 foreign security guards nabbed in raid
SEREMBAN: Immigration authorities have detained 17 foreigners who were hired as security guards during a raid at several business outlets here.
None of those detained possessed valid travel documents.
State director Faizal Fazri Othman said the raids were conducted at banks, money changer outlets and supermarkets here.
“We are shocked that security companies have the audacity not only to hire foreigners, but also those without valid travel documents.
“The security companies also seem to have total disregard for the law by blatantly stationing the guards in public places,” he said.
He said the guards were aged between 20 and 30 years. Three of those detained were women.
Faizal Fazri said the Home Ministry only allowed Nepalese who had served in the armed forces of their country to be hired as guards here.
He said the Nepalese detained during the raids did not fulfil the criteria. Also detained were several Indonesians.
They were detained for not having valid travel documents.
“We will also charge their employers with hiring guards without going through the proper procedures,” he said.
Faizal said offenders could be fined up to RM50,000 or jailed up to five years for each guard.
