The six-day period from April 11-16 was billed as a preview, and only those with tickets and invitations were allowed to walk in and enjoy the various offerings and attractions.

But yesterday, Jewel Changi Airport opened its doors to all and predictably, a big crowd turned up, with snaking queues spotted at big brands like Shake Shack, A&W and the Pokemon Centre.

It was a different story for other shops in the 10-storey complex, though.

Just metres away from the Pokemon Centre, homegrown toy shop brand Action City hardly drew any interest.

Mr Hermie Cohen, 30, the assistant supervisor at the shop, was obviously disappointed.

"There's not as many people as compared to the preview days," he told The New Paper.

"We've had a few customers, but all of them have been Singaporeans."

He added that he hopes business will pick up eventually.

Jewel took four years to develop at a cost of $1.7 billion.

About 500,000 people had signed up for free tickets for the public preview.

Mr Lee Jian Sheng, 25, a barista at O'Coffee Club, said: "There were crazy crowds during the preview, but it's been surprisingly quiet during the actual opening."

He said that most of the crowd yesterday headed for the big brand names, leaving other shops empty.

Along a stretch on the first storey dedicated to local brands, Chocolate Origin saw few customers, but owner Don Koh, 40, was upbeat.

"Business is actually better than expected," he said.

"We were not hoping for crowds because it's better for us to have just one or two customers at any one time so we can help them appreciate our products."

He said having a shop at Jewel was more about branding.

"We intend to expand regionally, so this will allow us to have a lot of exposure and get more people familiar with the name," he added.

Not sure whether its a good idea to mix airport with shopping under same management.

It's good for the rent collectors, in this case I presume to be Changi Airport Group.

There'll be at least a couple of retail casualties by the end of the year. Just wait and see.

Ordinary people aren't going to go all the way to Changi Airport to shop and dine. It's too far out of the way, even if you live in the east.

And you can't even cycle/walk into Changi Airport T4, you have to drive or take public transport.

The whole idea of having a airport is to reduce all the hassles that comes when boarding a aircraft. The shopping business will distract airport management from doing this.

Who gives a fuck about the other shops?

My family and I had great meals at A&W and Shake Shack.

don’t be surprised as sinkie families with kids and maids in tow have been going to t3 to jalan jalan and makan makan in the weekends. the food court at basement 3 of t3 is always crowded in the weekends. sinkie families have their kids play in basement 3, shop for groceries at the ntuc store, and makan after choping table at the food court. they deprive passengers and airport workers of tables there. it’s a sinkie past time. now that jewel is opened the sinkie weekend crowd will be there instead as makan is readily available plus the shopping for their wives and “playground” for their kids. it’s very formulaic, and sinkie landlords and developers follow the same formula to draw in the soixante neuf crowds. must be big, air-conned, have makan, brand new, have special features, look like a fairyland to attract sinkies for at least 6.9 months. after that, sinkies will swarm the next new makan and shopping sexperience, such as the lake district. and after that, must cum out with another new venue for the same horde of 69% sinkie sheep to graze.

Who the fuck goes there for Sinkie shops??
These people are deluded, even Sinkie girls are unfuckable.

Orchard road already half dead... what the fuck are they expecting?

Sg has many identical malls for fuck:biggrin:

Indeed, the novelty factor is gone. Back in the day there were no suburb malls islandwide, going to the mall was an outing you plan for the weekend. Maybe to Plaza Singapura, Parkway Parade, Raffles City (Sogo) or IMM (with the Japanese supermarket where you could only shop if you had paid for its membership).

I once saw a Pinoy lady handing out condoms on an upper floor corridor of Lucky Plaza. In broad daylight. With a smile.

Is she a safe sex ambassador, a whore or is that an invitation to fuck? By invitation, I mean one night stand.
