A 12-YEAR-OLD boy has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out a series of daytime break-ins.

The suspected serial burglar is said to have stolen a total of $250 in cash and a laptop by walking boldly through the front doors of unsecured houses in Yishun.

It is believed that he took advantage of residents across the estate who left their front doors unlocked or open while they were in another room, or asleep.

The boy is said to be responsible for at least four break-ins carried out over two weeks this month.

The burglaries came to a halt after victims lodged police reports, and the resulting investigations led to the boy's arrest on Monday. Investigations are ongoing.

While the offence of housebreaking and theft carried out in the daytime carries a jail term of up to 10 years, criminal lawyers say offenders aged 16 and under are usually dealt with by the Juvenile Justice Division at the Subordinate Courts.
