Tharman Shanmugaratnam, our deputy prime minister who doubles up as finance minister, has been named Finance Minister of the Year 2013.

The accolade is by Euromoney, a global banking and finance publication.

Euromoney credited Tharman for his “over-arching role in enabling Singapore to shift its growth model from population-driven to productivity-driven expansion, while at the same time maintaining its status as an innovative trade and financial services hub to diversified export markets.”

In English, it’s like saying Shahril Ishak beat Lionel Messi to the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

In the feature by Euromoney, they commented that “Shanmugaratnam’s views carry weight” and added that he “has assumed a statesman-like role in the region in recent years”.

We think so too. Here are 12 reasons why DPM Tharman is carrying the weight of the PAP on his back.

You know how in every team there is that one guy who puts in more than everyone else?

The guy who shoulders the most responsibilities and has far more street cred?

If Tharman is good, SG wont be in this sorry state.

Is there any good minister in SG Parliament?

Brother Confuseous, the talents are there in PAP,but the problem is they have the best HARDWAREC(more than 100%) but 10% SOFTWARE,Minister Tharman is simply a bright spark who lost or sold his soul, worst than Mr Ngiam Tong Dow who made a silly mistake.

In any cabinet in any country, there will be a range of talent. Singapore is no different.

In the old days when LKY reigned supreme, Goh Kheng Swee and Hon Sui Sen stood above the rest of the ministers. The clowns were Chua Sian Chin and Othman Wok.

You forget the sterling qualities of Yong Nyuk Lin and Lee Chiaw Meng.

not forgetting eddie barker who taught the old guards about the finer things in life like using a rock glass instead of a hi-ball to drink scotch on the rocks, western cuisine, to use a fork and knife well and a well tailored jacket over a plain shirt to look dapper and dandy. work rate was high too....

Brother po2wq,Mr Ngiam did not sell his soul to work for LKY,he did not make much money anyway, and did not get much from GLCs either,he made a silly mistake for not knowing how far he or his family are willing or able to go - the brothers and sisters here do know how far we or our family can go.Tharman is very much difficult,an economist with a different ruler for different people,he has no soul now,Almighty God Allah Jehovah bless him.Allahu Akbur.

That must be the joke of the year! Ngiam encriched himself and family IMMENSELY over the years. And you know, it's not by way of monthly wages. LKY's salary was pitifully low too when he was PM, yet he's now the richest and most powerful man in singapore.
