12 motorists nabbed in island-wide blitz on drink-driving

SINGAPORE: Twelve motorists were arrested in an island-wide blitz on drink-driving.
The Traffic Police conducted the operation from 1am to 4.30am on Saturday.
Several road blocks were mounted at Buangkok East Drive, Kallang Road and Outram Road.
57 drivers were stopped and tested for alcohol.
Of these, 12 were arrested for drink-driving.
The suspects - 11 men and one woman - are aged between 27 and 56 years.
The highest breath evidential analyser test result was 70 micro-grammes of alcohol per 100 milli-litre of breath, twice the prescribed legal limit.
If convicted, motorists who drink and drive will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.
They will lose their driving licences and have to re-take the theory and practical driving tests.
In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000, or jailed up to six months.
Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
They may also be caned up to six strokes if they cause death or serious injury.
