An 18-year-old Wayne Rooney moved to Old Trafford on August 31, 2004, after a summer of negotiations between United and Everton.

He would eventually cost £27m (€37m at the time), making him the most expensive teenager in world football at the time. Rooney is now approaching a decade at the club.

8. Marouane Fellaini - £27.5m

Marouane Fellaini has proven to be one of the club's most maligned signings ever just one year into his Old Trafford career.

The Belgium international was hurriedly recruited from the Toffees on transfer deadline day 2013 for £27.5m (€32.5m) - €3.5m more than they would have spent, had they moved for the midfielder earlier in the window - and was swiftly reunited with David Moyes, his former boss at Goodison Park.

Juan Sebastian Veron went down as one of the biggest flops in English football history after United paid £28.1m (then €46.8m) to Lazio for the midfielder in 2001, smashing the domestic transfer record at the time.

The Argentine, a supremely talented playmaker, never adjusted to the Premier League and was sold to Chelsea for €21.5m in 2003.

A year after David Moyes tried to prise him from Athletic, United finally snapped up Ander Herrera for £29m (€35m) in July 2014.

The Premier League club had to trigger a release clause in the Basque midfielder's contract to eventually land him, and he is expected to play a key role in Louis van Gaal's new-look United.

Luke Shaw, like Wayne Rooney before him, became the most expensive teenager in the world back in July when United paid Southampton £30m (€38m) for the left-back.

His start to life at Old Trafford has been curtailed by fitness issues, but he is expected to patrol the left flank for the best part of a decade and has been handed Patrice Evra's No.3 shirt.

On July 22, 2002, Rio Ferdinand became the most expensive defender in history for the second time when he moved from Leeds to Manchester United for £30m (€47m at the exchange rate of the time).

The transfer also made him the most expensive British footballer in history at the time, and he went on to win six Premier League titles and the Champions League among other trophies.

Despite a dramatic arrival on deadline day and fleeting belief that he could prove to be the second coming of Eric Cantona, Dimitar Berbatov never really justified his then club record £30.75m (€38m) pricetag that sealed his arrival from Tottenham in 2008.

By the end of his time at Old Trafford it was accepted that his languid playing style slowed down United's play too much, especially in the years following the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.
