THE youngest victim Inspector Chris Lee dealt with was also the one who would haunt him the most.

Two years ago, he led a team investigating the case of a three-year-old who was abused and died later. The child had bruises and bite marks all over his body.

The man responsible - the boyfriend of the boy's mother - was convicted of causing grievous hurt and ill-treating the boy. He was jailed for seven years and given 12 strokes of the cane.

'There are times when we work three days without rest, but trust me when you catch the guy and see a successful conviction, it's worth it,' said Inspector Lee, 36, who has been with the Criminal Investigation Department's Special Investigation Section for the last two years.

He is among 1,720 police officers, 87 Volunteer Special Constabulary officers and 354 operationally ready national servicemen who are receiving their certificates of promotion today.

Inspector Lee, recently called into action to nab the Kallang slashers who killed and attacked random victims, has been a policeman for 15 years.

In the course of his work, he has learnt to make sense of medical notes, and even operate a crane. 'You need to know how a crane works to think like an operator and see what could go wrong such that a container can fall and kill someone,' he said.

Another officer getting his promotion certificate today is Police Tactical Unit Station Inspector Abdul Latif Abdul Talib, 31. He leads a team deployed to maintain public order across the island.

Sometimes tourists come up to him and his men, asking them to pose for a photo together while they are on the job. This, he has to politely decline.

He was promoted from Senior Staff Sergeant, while Inspector Lee was promoted from Senior Station Inspector on June 1.

for every one poodles that gets promoted, it is done at the expense of 10 cadets.... sad but a true fact. All these promoted poodles all had scholarships so they were fast tracked right from the beginning.... not suprisingly.
