The headline of the report (“Govt will continue to help Malays”; Nov 24) and its sub-head (“789 get $1.2m worth of bursaries; Shanmugam urges support for community in tackling concerns”) may have created the impression that the $1.2 million worth of bursaries were funded by the Government.
Since its formation in 1965, the Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday Memorial Scholarship Fund Board (commonly known as LBKM) has not received any funding from the Government. Our funds are from donations and sponsorships from individual and corporate donors, sponsors and well-wishers.
While there is no direct funding from the Government, LBKM has been receiving other forms of government support, including the status of an Institution of a Public Character, which allows LBKM to issue tax-deduction receipts for donations.
This year, we have given out bursaries worth $1.67 million to more than 1,600 needy students from primary to post-graduate levels. Since our first bursary disbursement worth $3,900 to 18 needy students in 1966, we have disbursed more than 21,000 bursaries totalling $16.7 million.
