Malaysian drug haul goes missing from police station: report
AFP - Tuesday, August 5KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - - A drug haul worth 1.0 million ringgit (about 300,000 dollars) has gone missing from police custody, jeopardising a probe into an international drug syndicate, a report said Tuesday.
The New Straits Times said the five-kilo stash of amphetamines, or "syabu", which had been stored at police headquarters in southern Johor state was believed to be from the year's biggest drug bust.
The daily said the thieves were alleged to be policemen and that they had used acid to dissolve the padlock to the evidence room where the drugs were kept, while 60 officers were on duty in the building.
It cited unnamed sources as saying that a police officer was detained on Saturday for failing a urine test carried out after the drugs were discovered missing on Thursday.
In March police announced they had busted an international drug ring in Johor, which borders Singapore, arresting twelve people including four Singaporeans and a Thai national.
Over 46 kilos of heroin (101 pounds), 11,316 Ecstasy pills and other drugs worth more 48 million ringgit (15 million dollars) were seized in a haul believed to have been destined for export.
Welcome to Malaysia, where politicians play backside and law enforcers are corrupted beyond redemption! Malaysia, truly asia!
