BUTTERWORTH: The Customs Department has foiled an attempt to smuggle 1,063kg of ecstasy worth RM78mil hidden inside modified silent air compressors.
Customs director-general Datuk Zazuli Johan said the Penang Narcotics unit inspected a container filled with 20 compressors at the North Butterworth Container Terminal on May 6.
"Upon inspection, it was found that the compressors were modified to hide bags of pills believed to be ecstasy.
"The pils weighed 1,063kg with a market value of over RM78mil," he told a press conference at Penang Customs in Prai on Friday (May 12).
Zazuli said a local 48-year-old was arrested on the same day as the narcotics find.
"He has been remanded for seven days until Saturday (May 13) for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
"The items had not been declared yet as (the consignment) had not reached the 10-day declaration limit," he said.
Zazuli said investigations are ongoing but it is believed that the drugs were from Europe.
"We are still investigating to identify others involved," he said.
