Indonesian authorities are about to demolish Jakarta's most notorious red light district, evicting hundreds of people who live among the area's illegal brothels, casinos and bars.

The bulldozers are due to move in on Monday at the once-bustling riverside shantytown of Kalijodo in North Jakarta.

It is home to about 3,000 people — including plenty of legal businesses and families that have lived there for decades.

"We don't know where to move. They've turned us into beggars by taking away our jobs," local food seller Dewi said.

She has lived in Kalijodo since 1989 and raised five children there — her youngest is four years old.

Authorities handed her an eviction letter about one week ago.

"They just came here with 250 police, giving us a deadline to leave," she said.

"They didn't speak much, just telling us this land will be cleared, and asking us to pack and leave."

I live in Jakarta and this Kalijodo is just 3-4km from where I live. It's hidden behind Pluit Emporium so no one can see it from the main road. Truth of the matter

1. Kalijodo for more than 40'years has been a bastion for illegal activities particularly low end prostituon
2. Frequented by local Indonesians that is non-Chinese
3. Obviously controlled by mafias with very powerful high level government links
4. Was threatened to shut down by previous officials but each time failed when orders from up there quash it
5. Known as the largest brothel of Jakarta for its concentration of this activity
6. Many living in this area are registered residents
7. Ahok the current Governer of Jakarta before this impending clearing of Kalijodo had already distributed low cost housing (flats) to all registered residents for free, flat by the way is furnished partially
8. The above report is not exactly true, the eviction is based on 3 steps which started about a year ago when people inside the enclave were notified and registered residents were allocated flats. The one week eviction notice is the third and final notification.
9. The left overs are people who are not registered and who refused to register due to all sorts of reasons.
10. You go in there now not many are left most had gone away to their allocated apartments.

It takes a strong leader to be able to do this. Ahok had done a great job for Jakarta and residents in Jakarta can visibly see these changes. One very visible change is the flood many residents had noticed it's better controlled now. I think with the current administration in Indonesia many good things are happening, slowly but surely.

When asked to comment on this Kalijodo eviction by the Jakarta Governer, President Jokowi answered,

This government has balls that no other Indonesian government ever have.

With a half decent gov't the indonesian's future will improve.
I know of some Sporeans who with the help of their indonesian friends are working there & doing well.

I know a few Indonesians who are working in Spore & none of them have taken up Sporean citizenship. Why should they? They can always go back to an improving country or move on to countries like Australia, Canada, ....

As for becoming Sporeans, no way  They have seen how the PAP treats the "lesser mortals" of Spore.
