SINGAPORE: A former senior police officer was charged with 12 counts of accepting bribes from the operator of an illegal massage parlour on Thursday.

Investigations showed that former senior staff sergeant Ong Thiam Hock allegedly received the bribes in the form of sexual favours and cash amounting to S$7,000 between May and July last year.

The court was told that Ong was attached to Clementi Police Division's Compliant Management Unit which oversees the management of Licensees for Public Entertainment, Liquor and Massage Establishment.

There, he got to know Chinese national Zhong Xianqin who operated "Tian Zi" massage parlour at Clementi. Ong previously arrested the China national for working illegally in another massage establishment.

Zhong kept in contact with Ong and informed him she was going to operate an unlicensed massage establishment in Clementi.

That's when Ong accepted the bribes in exchange to provide tip-offs on impending Police raids on unlicensed massage establishments.

Ong was arrested on Wednesday morning. - CNA/vm

I think we are wasting taxpayers money by sending cops after soft targets like Massage Parlours.

Recently only the Home Team explained its many embarrassing lapses in key locations like Airports, detention centers ect2 by saying there is a shortage of manpower. Yet, we constantly send policeman down to raid places like Massage Parlours, Pubs, and KTV's while harden criminals and tough targets like illegal loan sharks seems to be left relatively untouched.

It appears to me that they are more concerned with loss of revenue than security of the citizens. The existence of all these unlicensed joints represents a loss of revenue as they do not pay any fees or taxes and the authorities are therefore very active trying to plug this. How much of these revenue collected are blown away by the long term investments of GIC/Temasek?

I prefer our Police to concentrate on protecting our homes and making our country safe- not running around chasing after girls in massage parlours, pubs and KTV's.Such soft jobs can easily be done by enforcement officers from the Immigration, Tax, ROC ect2.So many Singaporeans are jobless and
a good number are NSmen-so it will be no problem to recruit people for such enforcement jobs.
