North Korea 'has missile-ready nuclear weapon'

North Korea says it has developed a more advanced nuclear weapon that can be loaded on to a ballistic missile.

The state news agency released pictures of leader Kim Jong-un inspecting what it said was a new hydrogen bomb.

There has been no independent verification of the claims.

International experts say the North has made advances in its nuclear weapons capabilities but it is unclear if it has successfully miniaturised a nuclear weapon it can load on to a missile.

Pyongyang has defied UN sanctions and international pressure to develop nuclear weapons and to test missiles which could potentially reach the mainland US.

State news agency KCNA said Kim Jong-un had visited scientists at the nuclear weapons institute and "guided the work for nuclear weaponisation".

How advanced is North Korea's nuclear programme?
Have North Korea's missile tests paid off?
What can the outside world do?
Can the US defend itself against North Korea?

"The institute recently succeeded in making a more developed nuke," the report said, adding: "He (Kim Jong-un) watched an H-bomb to be loaded into a new ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile)."

The report carried pictures of the leader inspecting the device. It described the weapon as "a multi-functional thermonuclear nuke with great destructive power which can be detonated even at high altitudes".

Defence expert Melissa Hanham, of the Middlebury Institute for International Studies in California, said that the North's claims could not be verified from the photographs alone.

"We don't know if this thing is full of styrofoam, but yes, it is shaped like it has two devices," she said on Twitter. Hydrogen bombs detonate in two stages.

She added: "The bottom line is that they probably are going to do a thermonuclear test in the future, we won't know if it's this object though."

North Korea has carried out a series of missile tests in recent months, including weapons that put the mainland US in range.

Last week it fired a missile over Japan in a move Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called an "unprecedented" threat to his country.

North Korea has also threatened to fire missiles towards the US Pacific territory of Guam.

In August, US President Donald Trump warned Pyongyang it would face "fire and fury" if it continued to threaten the US.

The North has previously claimed to have miniaturised a nuclear weapon but experts have cast doubt on this. There is also scepticism about the North's claims to have developed a hydrogen bomb, which is more powerful than an atomic bomb.

Hydrogen bombs use fusion - the merging of atoms - to unleash huge amounts of energy, whereas atomic bombs use nuclear fission, or the splitting of atoms.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests. Its most recent, and most powerful, came in September last year.

Correspondents say that although North Korea could conduct its sixth test at any time, there has been no recent activity at its Punggye-ri test site.
North Korea's missile programme:

North Korea has been working on its missile programme for decades, with weapons based on the Soviet-developed Scud
It has conducted short- and medium-range tests on many occasions, sometimes to mark domestic events or at times of regional tension
In recent months the pace of testing has increased; experts say North Korea appears to be making significant advances towards its goal of building a reliable long-range nuclear-capable weapon
In July, North Korea launched two missiles which it said were Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) capable of hitting the US; experts believe they put parts of the US in range
There is no consensus on how close North Korea is to miniaturising a nuclear warhead to put on a missile

North Korea claims it can load hydrogen bomb onto missile

North Korea's state-run media claimed that the country has developed the ability to load a hydrogen bomb onto a new intercontinental ballistic missile, although some outside experts already cast doubts on the claim.

According to Pyongyang's state media Korean Central News Agency, Kim Jong Un inspected the loading of a "homemade" hydrogen bomb onto the ICBM at North's Nuclear Weapons Institute.

The explosive power of the bomb is adjustable from tens kiloton to hundreds kiloton," the state run KCNA said.

But the Institute for Science and International Security, a U.S. non-profit dedicated to providing public knowledge of nuclear proliferation and international security, tweeted that North Korea can "build any H bomb (two stage) model it wants and call it whatever it wants but that does not make it real." The non-profit also said "it looked like a model in a room for models."

North Korea in July conducted its first ever ICBM tests, part of a stunning jump in progress for the country's nuclear and missile program since Kim rose to power following his father's death in late 2011.

The North conducted two nuclear tests last year alone. The first involved what it claims to have been a hydrogen bomb and the second was its most powerful ever. Experts and outside governments are skeptical of the hydrogen claim, but it is almost impossible to independently confirm North Korean statements about its highly secret weapons program.

The key question is how far North Korea has gotten in efforts to consistently shrink down nuclear warheads so they can fit on long-range missiles.

South Korea's main spy agency has previously asserted that it does not think Pyongyang currently has the ability to develop miniaturized nuclear weapons that can be mounted on ballistic missiles. Some experts think the North may have mastered this technology.

North Korea is thought to have a handful of rudimentary nuclear bombs and has spent decades trying to perfect a multistage, long-range missile to eventually carry smaller versions of those bombs.

Japan: North Korea conducts sixth nuclear test

By Taehoon Lee and Joshua Berlinger, CNN

Updated 0624 GMT (1424 HKT) September 3, 2017

It would be the country's sixth nuclear test
North Korean state media released images

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)North Korea has conducted a sixth nuclear test, the Japanese government said, a move the United States and its allies in the region are likely to view as a major provocation.
Seismological data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) showed that an explosion caused a 6.3-magnitude tremor in the country's northeast, not far from the country's Punggye-ri nuclear test site.

If the initial data holds, it would make it the most powerful weapon North Korea has ever tested. The last nuclear test Pyongyang conducted, which was nearly a year ago, triggered a 5.3-magnitude seismological event.
"After analyzing data provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Japanese government concluded that North Korea has conducted a nuclear test," Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said in a live television broadcast.
North Korean state media said it will make a major announcement at 3 p.m. Pyongyang time (2:30 a.m. Eastern Time).
South Korea and Japan are gathering and analyzing data to confirm details of the test, which Japanese Minister Shinzo Abe said could not be tolerated.
"If North Korea did indeed conduct a nuclear test, we absolutely cannot tolerate and must protest firmly. We will convene a National Security council meeting to gather and analyze the information," Abe said in a live television broadcast prior to Kono's announcement.
South Korea is holding a National Security Council meeting to discuss the incident, presided by President Moon Jae-in, according to South Korea's presidential office. Japan has dispatched so-called "radiation sniffer" planes to take samples to confirm that a nuclear explosion did in fact take place.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the military had "detected a man-made earthquake near Punggye-ri and is analyzing whether it was a nuclear test."
It also announced that the military has raised its alert status.
Japan Meteorological Agency also observed a magnitude-6.1 tremor in North Korea, which showed a different waveform from a natural quake around 12:31 p.m. local (11:31 p.m. ET).
A second, smaller tremor was detected by the USGS and its Chinese counterpart. Both speculated it may have been caused by some sort of structural collapse.
Progression
North Korea's weapons program has been progressing at a rapid pace under leader Kim Jong Un.
The country tested two nuclear weapons last year, including one in September close to the country's Foundation Day holiday.
This would be the first nuclear test under the administration of US President Donald Trump, which says it is pursuing what it calls a strategy of "peaceful pressure" to get North Korea to bring its nuclear weapons program to the negotiating table.
But critics worry that the Trump administration's insistence on denculearization and some of the President's harsh rhetoric have done more harm than good.
"The test is dramatic, but not necessarily a game-changer. Thermonuclear weapons are more destructive, but their use can be deterred with the same actions as smaller warheads. The critical thing is now is that the United States does not cause more damage with its reaction than the test did itself," said Adam Mount, a North Korea expert and senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.
North Korea sees its nuclear weapons program as crucial to deterring any US-led attempts at invasion, making it unlikely that they will negotiate it away, analysts say.
"It's too late to think we could create enough pressure and pain that they will volunteer to eliminate their arsenal. The priority now is to maintain stability, to lower the risk of miscalculation and miscommunication so that a war doesn't break out that nobody wants," Mount said. "Denuclearization is a long-term goal, not a short-term solution."
Tensions between North Korea and the international community flared against last week after Pyongyang flew a missile over Japan. The United States and its allies responded by sending fighter jets and bombers over the Korean Peninsula in a so-called "show of force" operation.
The test comes just hours after the country released images of Kim inspecting what it said was a hydrogen bomb ready to be fitted atop a missile with intercontinental capabilities.
Pyongyang test-fired two missiles last month that experts say could potentially deliver a nuclear warhead to the United States.
Why North Korea wants nukes and missiles

North Korea has long maintained it wants nuclear weapons and long-range missiles in order to deter the United States from attempting to overthrow the regime of Kim Jong Un.

Pyongyang looks at states like Iraq -- where former dictator Saddam Hussein was overthrown by the United States, and Libya -- the country's late leader, Moammar Gaddafi, gave up his nuclear ambitions for sanctions relief and aid, only to be toppled and killed after the US intervened in the country's civil unrest -- and believes that only being able to threaten the US homeland with a retaliatory nuclear strike can stop American military intervention.

Many experts believe North Korea would not use the weapons first. Kim Jong Un values his regime's survival above all else and knows the use of a nuclear weapon would start a war he could not win, analysts say.
"We shouldn't be surprised by the fact they had the test, but usually they spread it out a bit," says Melissa Hanham, a senior research associate in the East Asia Nonproliferation Program (EANP) at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.
If the current magnitude holds, it's possible that the weapon tested Sunday was a thermonuclear device, but it's impossible to say if it was the peanut-shaped object shown in the images released by North Korean state media, says Hanham.
"When you're evaluating these explosions, you have to do it with a grain of salt because you're trying to mold a mathematical equation to something that's happening in the real world. And the equations can to grip on things like depth or the geology of the area, and we don't know those kinds of facts," she said.
Experts have said for months that another nuclear test was likely on the way, with satellite imagery revealing that a new tunnel had been dug earlier this year.
Independent nuclear experts told CNN that another test would likely be a way to increase the yield, or destructive power, of a weapon.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visits the country's Nuclear Weapons Institute in an image released by state media Sunday.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visits the country's Nuclear Weapons Institute in an image released by state media Sunday.
North Korea claimed that it set off a thermonuclear weapon during the September 2016 test, but experts said the data showed it was more likely boosted fission weapon. Thermonuclear weapons typically use a fission explosion to create a fusion reaction, which is far more powerful than a fission reaction.
"For months North Korea refrained from conducting a nuclear test and from launching missiles over Japan, even though that meant testing on highly lofted trajectories and launching satellites to the south rather than east, which is more efficient. It now seems to have decided to end that restrain," said David Wright, the co-director of the Union of Concerned Scientists Global Security Program.
"While this is likely to make it more difficult for the US and its allies to pursue diplomacy, that remains the best of the options on the table for trying to reduce the level of tension and avoid a crisis."

CNN's Brad Lendon contributed to this report.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake that rocked North Korea on Sunday is presumed to be a weapons test after Kim Jong Un reportedly inspected a “super explosive” hydrogen bomb developed for its intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The U.S. Geological Survey detected a surface “explosion” around 12:30 p.m. local time and a second tremor clocking in at magnitude 4.1 at the same location.

Chinese seismologists suggested the second earthquake was due to a "cave in.”

Japan’s Foreign Ministry attributed the seismic activity to the North’s sixth nuclear test.

China fires back at Trump's bogus claim about North Korea

“It is absolutely unacceptable if North Korea did force another nuclear test, and we must protest strongly,” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said sternly.

North Korea’s latest test is believed to have greatly surpassed its last detonation nearly a year ago on Sept. 9, which packed 15 to 25 kilotons — similar to the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki during World War II. The rumbling was felt along China’s border to North Korea and up the Russian coast.

It interrupted brunch for Michael Spavor, director of the Kaektu Cultural Exchange with North Korea, in a neighboring Chinese city.

“I was eating brunch just over the border here in Yanji when we felt the whole building shake,” Spavor told Reuters. “It lasted for about five seconds. The city air raid sirens started going off.”

North Korea wants to launch more missiles after Japan threat

As Pacific Rim leaders rushed to address the supposed test Sunday, Pyongyang scheduled an “important announcement.”

The U.S. State Department had no immediate reaction.

The Korean News Agency released photos of Kim and his lieutenants examining what was apparently a silver, peanut-shaped thermonuclear weapon, and raised the specter of a nuclear bomb test by the Kim regime.

The statement was enough to raise concerns in Washington, Japan and the Korean Peninsula about the state of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal.

Putin: North Korea, U.S. on verge of large-scale conflict

President Trump and Japanese President Shinzo Abe, in a Saturday phone call, discussed “ongoing efforts to maximize pressure on North Korea,” according to the White House.

Abe told reporters that he agreed with Trump’s call to keep the heat on Kim in the wake of the latest claims from North Korea.

“The two leaders reaffirmed the importance of close cooperation between the United States, Japan, and South Korea in the face of the growing threat from North Korea,” the White House report on the phone call said.

The North Korean leader inspected the new H-bomb at his nation’s Nuclear Weapons Institute, according to a Sunday statement from the state-run Korean News Agency.

The bomb was portrayed as part of North Korea’s stated program to build a nuclear arsenal capable of reaching the United States’ mainland.

In July, North Korea conducted a pair of ICBM tests for the first time — illustrative of the nation’s advancements in nuclear weapons and missiles since Kim took over from his father in 2011.

South Korea’s main spy agency believes their northern neighbors lack the technology to create miniaturized nuclear weapons for mounting on missiles.

There was also widespread skepticism when North Korea claimed to have detonated a hydrogen bomb this past summer. Many other nationals believe North Korea at best boasts a small number of rudimentary nuclear weapons.

Perhaps Singapore should buy or develop our own hydrogen bomb. With such a powerful weapon in our arsenal, no country including chinkland, would dare to disrespect us again. Chinkland would be practically begging us to participate in their OBOR projects.

Magnitude 5.3 earthquake rumbles through southeast Idaho
Associated Press

The U.S. Geological Survey says a moderate magnitude 5.3 earthquake has rumbled through southeast Idaho.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The epicenter of the quake was located 11 miles east of Soda Springs, Idaho, and was also felt in Wyoming, and across northern Utah in Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Draper and Provo.

The USGS reported four separate quakes Saturday evening in an area about 63 miles from Pocatello and 130 miles from Salt Lake City.

The largest quake at magnitude 5.3 struck just before 6 p.m. local time. The USGS said a handful of smaller quakes followed for about an hour.

The agency says only slight damage occurs with earthquakes at that level of intensity.

Earthquake hits Yellowstone as thousands arrive in 'volcano park' for solar eclipse

AN EARTHQUAKE struck the Yellowstone National Park area as tens of thousands of people were arriving to catch sight of the once-in-a-life-time total solar eclipse.
By Jon Austin
PUBLISHED: 04:01, Tue, Aug 22, 2017 | UPDATED: 07:39, Tue, Aug 22, 2017

The 3.2 magnitude quake was just nine miles north of West Yellowstone, Montana, which is on the edge of the huge national park, according to the US Geological Survey.

Yellowstone includes one of the most dangerous volcanic calderas in the world, and it is feared that a major eruption, that could bring nuclear winter like effects, is long overdue.

A series of earthquake swarms, that it was feared could trigger the volcano, has been rumbling since June 12.

There were over 1,400 tremors in the region by August 3, with experts stating that the swarm could go on for another month.

Today’s quake, which hit at 3am local time, followed a 2.5 magnitude quake at 7.23pm local time yesterday, which was at a depth of six miles, leading to fears they could be increasing in intensity.

Express.co.uk discovered earthquakes have slowly been increasing in intensity there.

Since July 31 there have been around 300 small quakes in and around the park, most;y of magnitude one or two.

Yesterday's was the most powerful since a 3.1 magnitude quake hit 30 miles west of West Yellowstone on August 10.

A magnitude 3.2 quake is still considered relatively minor, however, with anything over magnitude six classed as a major earthquake.

A statement from the National Park Service said: “August 21 is anticipated to be the busiest day in the history of the park”.

It added: “Expect heavy congestion, traffic gridlock and long delays.

“Visitors should have a full tank of gas and extra food and drinks in anticipation of long waits.”

Many conspiracy theorists have claimed the eclipse is a warning sign of the end of the world.

A magnitude five quake also struck 50 miles off the coast of the Chiapas region of Mexico, just hours before the eclipse.

However, seismologists state that there is nothing to be concerned about yet.

Jamie Farrell at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City told New Scientist: “This is a large swarm but it is not the largest swarm we’ve recorded in Yellowstone.

“Earthquake swarms are fairly common in Yellowstone.

“There is no indication that this swarm is related to magma moving through the shallow crust.”

Fears that deadly Yellowstone supervolcano about to BLOW after 1400 earthquakes hit
YELLOWSTONE volcano has been struck by 1,400 earthquakes in recent weeks, leading to fears that the supervolcano is ready to blow and WIPE OUT life on Earth.

Seismic activity around the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, US, is not uncommon, but the heaviest swarm in half a decade has people very concerned.

Since June 12, there has been over 1,400 tremors in the region, and experts state that the swarm could go on for another month.

The Yellowstone Caldera supervolcano last erupted 70,000 years ago but a spike in seismic activity around the national park has unsettled nerves.

If the Wyoming volcano were to erupt it would kill an estimated 87,000 people immediately and make two-thirds of the USA immediately uninhabitable. The as the large spew of ash into the atmosphere would block out sunlight and directly affect life beneath it creating a “nuclear winter” and threatening ALL life on earth.

A Yellowstone eruption could wipe out America

The volcano is 80 km (50 mi) long 20 km (12 mi) wide and the 1500F chamber of molten rock beneath the surface is seven miles deep.

The massive eruption could be a staggering 6,000 times as powerful as the one from Washington’s Mount St Helens in 1980 which killed 57 people and deposited ash in 11 different states and five Canadian provinces.

Additionally, a climate shift would ensue as the volcano would spew massive amounts of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, which can form a sulphur aerosol that reflects and absorbs sunlight.

Yellowstone is overdue an eruption

Following Montana’s biggest earthquake in 34 years, a 5.4 tremor in early June, which is on the same fault line as Yellowstone, and coupled with the swarm of quakes in the National Park, many are convinced that the supervolcano is now ready to blow.

One local wrote on Twitter: “Earthquake in Bozeman = truly terrified Yellowstone volcano gonna go off.”

However, seismologists state that there is nothing to be concerned about yet.

Jamie Farrell at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City told New Scientist: “This is a large swarm but it is not the largest swarm we’ve recorded in Yellowstone.

In 2010 at least 78 were killed as Mount Merapi erupted in Indonesia

“Earthquake swarms are fairly common in Yellowstone.

“There is no indication that this swarm is related to magma moving through the shallow crust.”

NASA has been urged to row back on its plan to drill into the Yellowstone super volcano in a bid to stop it erupting.

A geologist at the national park claimed the idea could have dire consequences, possibly resulting in mass animal casaulties.

Dr Jefferson Hungerford, who works at Yellowstone, has warned the space agency to stay away from the volcano.

He said: “Messing with a mass that sits underneath our dynamic Yellowstone would potentially be harmful to life around us.

“It would potentially be a dangerous thing to play around with.”

And he questioned whether the drilling could even work, saying “we’re not there scientifically”.

Last month a scientist revealed the space agency's risky plan to prevent the Yellowstone super volcano erupting.

Brian Wilcox has shared a report on the natural hazard that was previously unseen outside the space agency.

The former member of the NASA Advisory Council on Planetary Defence spoke of the devastation that could be wrought by an eruption.

It's the bursting pimple theory lah.

Drilling into an active volcano is like bursting a zit from the side. A small hole will ease the pressure and let the pus ooze out slowly instead of exploding all over your bathroom mirror. It will work with an active volcano too.

Perhaps Singapore should buy or develop our own hydrogen bomb. With such a powerful weapon in our arsenal, no country including chinkland, would dare to disrespect us again. Chinkland would be practically begging us to participate in their OBOR projects.

Sammyboy.Com must nominate Kim Kim as SG53 President, instead of that useless Mak Cik Longtong.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed Sunday to “appropriately deal with” the latest nuclear test by North Korea, state news agency Xinhua said.

“The two leaders agreed to stick to the goal of denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula and keep close communication and coordination to deal with the new situation,” Xinhua said in a brief dispatch.

The two were meeting on the sidelines of a summit of the BRICS group of nations in the southeastern Chinese city of Xiamen.
