The cause of kleptomania isn't known. Several theories that suggest that changes in the brain may be at the root of kleptomania. More research is needed to better understand these possible causes, but kleptomania may be:
Linked to problems with a naturally occurring brain chemical (neurotransmitter) called serotonin. Serotonin helps regulate moods and emotions. Low levels of serotonin are common in people prone to impulsive behaviors.
Related to addictive disorders, and stealing may cause the release of dopamine (another neurotransmitter). Dopamine causes pleasurable feelings, and some people seek this rewarding feeling again and again.
Linked to the brain's opioid system. Urges are regulated by the brain's opioid system. An imbalance in this system could make it harder to resist urges.

I think that the root cause of Goh Lee Yin's kleptomania is GREED FOR MATERIAL THINGS. The same greed that propelled Singapore to one of the highest per capita GDP nations in the world today... but unfortunately, the same greed that will be the downfall of Singapore if left unchecked.

Self control however, is a secondary concern since it wouldn't be a consideration if this GREED wasn't an issue to begin with.

E.g. PAP MP and Ministers in parliament focusing excessively on implementing higher ministerial salaries:
"If the annual salary of the Minister of Information, Communication and Arts is only $500,000, it may pose some problems when he discuss policies with media CEOs who earn millions of dollars because they need not listen to the minister's ideas and proposals. Hence, a reasonable payout will help to maintain a bit of dignity."

I have no doubt that this GREED FOR MATERIAL THINGS has perhaps turned out to be a poison chalice and has now handed many Singaporeans (and politicians) to become slaves of their own greedy desires resulting in the nation state getting more and more dysfunctional day by day (tissue paper reservation arguments, violence against elderly who want to share tables(Toa Payoh)): where else but Singapore?

Goh Lee Yin as a victim to her desires and societal pressures is I think just the tip of the iceberg. There is probably more death and destruction to come.

THE NEW PAPER May 27, 2015
Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays are Mr Chan Kim Ban's favourite days of the week.
At 7pm on those days, the retiree turns on his iPad and opens the SG Live4D application to check the latest 4D results.
Mr Chan, 82, is an avid punter who has been betting with Singapore Pools since its inception in 1968.
He told The New Paper: "I started gambling when I was 30. Back then, there was no Singapore Pools so I placed my bets with private operators."
He estimates that he has spent over $100,000 in bets with Singapore Pools and spends close to $5,000 a year on 4D and the occasional Toto.
While the national average spent by local gamblers last year is much lower at US$1,019 (S$1,361), it was enough for La Fleur's Magazine, which reports on the US$262 billion global lottery industry, to name Singaporeans as the biggest lottery spenders.
That figure is close to 1.5 times that of the second-ranked Massachusetts State Lottery, where the average spent last year was US$730

To keltomania every stolen item is a trophy.

The more expensive and difficult to steal the stronger satisfaction one gets.

Why she needs to steal an oven?
Because it is so difficult to steal one.

She was sentenced to nine months' jail after pleading guilty.

In response to queries, a police spokesman said yesterday that a 36-year-old woman was found motionless at the foot of Block 405B, Fernvale Lane, at around 6.50am and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

Investigations are ongoing.

The Straits Times yesterday visited Goh's wake in Buangkok Green, where she had lived with her husband and baby girl.

Goh became a mother in January last year.

Friends and family members were seen comforting each other and paying their respects at the wake.

At 8.20pm, around 40 people attended a 50-minute Christian service. Goh's family gathered around her casket at the end of the service.

Those present at the wake asked for privacy and declined comment.

Senior consultant psychiatrist Munidasa Winslow said: "She was a very pleasant young lady who had unfortunately developed dysfunctional behaviours to cope with her emotions."

Dr Winslow had testified in Goh's defence in 2013, saying then that if Goh was put in prison without "therapies that may work for her, we are actually condemning her to a long term because we will be seeing her forever and ever again".

Dr Rajesh Jacob, senior consultant psychiatrist at Promises Healthcare, told The Straits Times that while shoplifting is not a common symptom of depression, those who suffer from the condition may steal because it gives them a "temporary elevation of mood".

He said he has seen at least two patients who had depression and were found guilty of shoplifting, and whose conditions improved after being given a Mandatory Treatment Order (MTO).

Implemented in 2010, the MTO is a community sentencing option for offenders suffering from mental conditions which have contributed to their committing the offence.

Offenders will not be sentenced to prison but will be asked to attend follow-up sessions at the Institute of Mental Health to see psychiatrists and psychologists

Goh, who was believed to have been charged in court last year (2016), allegedly stole more than $30,000 worth of items, including clothing from brands such as Kenzo, Louis Vuitton and Prada, and even a Breville oven .

U have a misconception about the condition and difficulties she facing.
It an inner and emotional struggle.
The original cancer is greed (the seeds of which could be sown by dysfunctional social pressure and culture).

Yes, she might get an emotional high when she steals without getting caught , however, just like many types of cancer that do metastasize, one must identify the primary cancer to get to the root of the problem, otherwise u will just be distracted by red herring symptoms and the patient will never get cured.

In her case, Singapore is a society overly infatuated with material things with little/no patience for others (just see how $$$ faced our parliamentarians are and another example below). Goh Lee Yin took this greed into her own hands and to the extreme much to the changrin of others around her (her Mt E colleagues ostracized her according to past news reports).

Unfortunately, the root of her disease (GREED) is very prevalent in Singapore as evidenced by Singapore's status as the society spending the most on lottery gambling in the world.

Goh Lee Yin is just the tip of the iceberg as she was caught because she stole much more than others and from flashy places (Orchard road shopping belt etc) but as a society, many are afflicted by Singaporeans dysfunctional selfishness/greed one way or another.

High costs of living due to politicians earning too much, deprived, latch key children (like Goh Lee Yin) because parents need to hold multiple jobs, physical violence @Toa Payoh hawlker centre because people demand privacy/ don't want to share spaces with people of 'lower status', kids deprived of their childhoods due to parents gambling, poor Singapore gahmen services due to incompetent gahmen due to politicians addiction (greed) for wealth and power.

Unless one can identify the ROOT of the problem, one would just be beating around the bush, doing lip service etc whilst the problem repeats itself : a tragic fact for Singapore.

Mandatory Treatment Order?
Maybe because the Mt E hospital psychiatrist (Dr Tan Chue Tin) got involved and news says that her then boyfriend's father was a practising specialist at Mt E hospital. They managed to get her a job @ Dr Tan's clinic and the BF's father fetched her home.

My guess is that the judge didn't want to upset the apple cart knowing that Mt E hospital doctors are supposed to be the best in Singapore (if not the most expensive) and probably better than IMH where firstly the state has to pay for her MTO and secondly, IMH is filled with mad, restrained Singaporeans (>1000 @ last count IIRC) and perhaps not as conducive as MEH where Goh Lee Yin was already receiving private specialist psychiatric consult.

However, on hindsight, perhaps the judge should have sent her to DRC (drug rehab centre) where people with addictions are treated (/stored): maybe group therapy there would have helped since (by my definition) ALL ADDICTIONS HAVE THEIR (similar) ROOTS IN GREED: in the case of drug addiction, it is the greed for more pleasure even if such experience causes destruction (e.g. dementia) in the long run or may cause dangerous delusions + disinhibitions which may harm others (ketamine etc)... thus the need for cold turkey treatments as well as counselling by religious/moral therapist so that such addicts can return to be useful, contributing members of society.

Unfortunately, the judge didn't see the similarity and neither did her psychiatrist apply the correct approach (addiction therapy like alcholics annonymous group type of therapy)...
Thus neither the root of her addiction was identified and her condition inappropriately medicalised and thoughtlessly (vaguely) labelled as 'chemical inbalance'. As a result, she received no appropriate group nor personal psychotherapy to identify the root of her problems which unfortunately remained unsolved till the day of her premature and untimely death by suicide.

(This is solely my personal opinion and does not constitute any form of advice, medical, legal or other wise).

Men [no women were members yet] who had proven over and over again, by extremely painful experience, that they could not get sober on their own had somehow become more powerful when two or three of them worked on their common problem. This, then—whatever it was that occurred among them—was what they could accept as a power greater than themselves. They did not need the Oxford Group." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholics_Anonymous

You all see the pattern here? She went for branded stuff. Even her husband (doctor or doctor's son?) came from a well to do family. Luckily he genuinely loved her

Everything for this woman had to be the best to fill the gaping hole in her psyche
