Lets handle the Malay psyche first especially those with Minangkabau heritage. To my knowledge over the years, they are one of the most inclusive and the most hospitable people on god's green earth where religion in the early years was not a factor. They however cannot handle confrontation and will lose very it very quickly both as an individual and a community.
However their inherent kindness, welcoming attitude and ready acceptance has led non- Malay Muslims in both Singapore and Malaysia to play both sides. We know that Indian and Chinese parents even till today will not ready accept a member of another race until at least after the baby pops. Even among the Indians, we have caste and station in life which continues to play a part.
Some of us are aware that the local Arabs despite being into the 5th and 6th generation in this part of the World have always intermarried including some of the biggest playboys. The law fraternity is a shining example.
The Muslims from India despite their sub-racial diversity does reveal that some segments prefer to remain within their communities. What I did notice though is that some with political and leadership aspiration have in their early adult lives began to portray themselves as Malays despite not marrying Malays. These are usually of Southern Indian origin. Then you have the South Indian hawkers and traders who have Indian wives and families back in India and conveniently married local Malay lasses for a second family. This particular lot is where the bulk of their offspring form the 1st and 2nd generation DKKs. Interestingly this is the lot that have climbed the local malay political ladder. They are usually traced to the Indian Muslims of the Malabar coast of Kerala. Mahathir's father comes from the same lineage.
And Yes, from what I have seen over the last 2 weeks, this has unexpectedly gone side ways and someone from the Govt and the PAP needs to handle this. I am pretty sure its the pure Malays who are the ones that are venting their spleen and rightfully so. Clearly the DKKs have usurped their place in the racial space.
Just my two cents but they better have someone sensible manage this - given how the community seems to have fallen into a more centralised Muslim identity since the noughties, this notion of racial profiling under the convenience of being "Malay" may have triggered a racial consciousness which seems to have grown dormant since the "malay" segment dominates the identity of muslims locally - so you then have the Indian Muslims who are either straight South Indians (with no affinity to Malay culture whatsoever), the Babus (who are typically from Bombay and converse in Hindi - the legendary teh tarik shop in Arab Street is a prime example) and then the DKKs (who have been absolved into Malay cultural norms) - and on the periphery there are those from the Yemeni Arab community (who may have adapted the language of the Malays but have always strived to distinguish themselves as not being Malay by trying to only marry within their Arab community) and then you also have the arrivals of a small group of Arabs "off the boat" (who seem to mostly be from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Lebanon) who have married into Malay households but have not embraced the Malay community yet (but who will have offspring of this new mixed-heritage going to school and learning Malay probably) - so let's see how this narrative develops further...
