Suicide: When all hope is lost

374 people killed themselves last year, but for every death, there were 7 failed attempts

By Mavis Toh

THE cabby's life was in a mess. His wife and two children were not speaking to him, and he had just been involved in an accident at work.
Plagued by family and financial woes, the 50-year-old wanted to end it all.

One afternoon in 2005, he drove his taxi to a spot near the Benjamin Sheares Bridge, then ran up the bridge and jumped, hoping to end his life.
But he survived, though he suffered broken ribs and injuries to his face.

Last year, 374 people here committed suicide. But for every suicide, there are about seven unsuccessful bids, say counsellors.

Suicide is a crime under Section 309 of the Penal Code. Last year, the police arrested 706 people for attempted suicide, a drop from 747 in 2006 and 870 in 2005. In 2004 and 2003, there were 745 and 685 cases respectively. Counsellors say there are many more cases of unreported suicide attempts.

Gee! Sinkies really are hopeless. They can't even kill themselves properly!

There's no bigger loser than someone who can't succeed in life and fails when it comes to killing him/herself too!:p

1 of my mum's friend also commited suicide by jumping over a hdb flat. She was depressed over her terminal stage of cancer. Her corpse was flogged with a rottan before 'keechia'.

Even in death they won't let off the punishment....:(
I heard that in the past they even handcuffed the corpse..

With all these rising cost especially in medical care, those slimes should just legalize euthanasia and let terminally ill people to die with dignity..

Someone should publish The Suicide Times and interview family members/relatives/friends the reasons for these suicides. We should be able to know how many from the following categories:

1) no money until no where to go
2) terminally sick
3) aged and forsaken
4) stressed from work or school or matters of the heart
5) adventure seekers/superhero wannabes

At least some action can be taken if we know the cause.
