Was man robbed or did he spend money on drinks?

04:46 AM Aug 11, 2011
SINGAPORE - A 20-year-old man is being investigated for making a false police report that he had been robbed of S$1,000 when he had actually spent it on drinking, said the police.

The police said yesterday that the man had lodged a police report on Aug 6 that he had been robbed along Yio Chu Kang Road.

He claimed the robber had come from behind, pointed a sharp object at him and robbed him. Officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division went round making checks and found that the victim had made a false report.

The police said he had actually spent all his money on drinking and frivolous activities and had made the false report to cover up his loss.

Investigations are still in progress.

Anyone convicted of knowingly giving any false information to a public servant can be jailed up to a year, or fined up to S$5,000, or both.
