KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Singapore progressed in Asian World Cup qualifying on Thursday after a 1-1 draw with Malaysia, advancing 6-4 on aggregate.

Seeking to overturn a 5-3 deficit from the first leg, Malaysia went ahead 1-0 on a goal by Safee Sali in the 58th minute. Shi Jiayi equalized for Singapore in the 73rd minute and the visitors held firm to secure the draw.

Singapore advanced to the group-stage third round alongside regional heavyweights such as Japan and Australia.

Singapore was the more organised side in the first half, forcing the Malaysians to stick to defending due to insufficient inspiration in their midfield.

S. Kunanlan orchestrated Malaysia's first goal by outmaneuvering two Singapore players before passing the ball to a lurking Safee.

Shi scored his goal from a counterattack to beat 'keeper Khairul Fahmi, who made several saves earlier in the match.

Singapore coach Radojko Avramovic said his team "got what we wanted" in front of 85,000 mostly hostile fans at Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Jalil Stadium.

"Malaysia played very good football but we played better, " Avramovic said. "We scored one goal but missed two or three good chances."

However, Avramovic claimed Japanese referee Takayama Hiroyoshi "had a poor game."

"It resulted in Malaysia's opening goal. My players stopped playing, thinking that the referee was going to whistle for a foul on Kunanlan before he passed the ball to Safee," Avramovic said
.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said he remained proud of the home team, urging the players to "learn from this defeat and continue working to improve their performance in the future."

Yeah the players were mostly at fault for not playing to the whistle but to be fair to the players thought the ref had given a foul. It certainly looked like it from TV coz the ref was standing right there and pointing to the Malaysian Goal direction immediately after the foul which means the ball was awarded to SG. The commentators also thought the foul was given. Even the Malaysian dude stopped to look around before he had the sense to pass the ball to his own guy. If he was waving play on then he was doing it all wrong.

There's no such thing as waving play on if he doesn't even acknowledge there was a foul in the first place.
The ref will only wave play on if he acknowledges there is a foul but gives the team which was fouled the advantage to carry on.
The point is if there is no whistle, then just carry on playing and in this case, defending.

Having said that, Raddy is a good coach and a top player in his day.
He was probably pissed with the ref for giving yellow cards to his players early on for offences which seemed no worse than the Malaysians.
Raddy was a top goalkeeper with Notts County when they were in the old English first division (equivalent of today's BPL).
He'e even mentioned in Ian Rush's autobiography, aptly titled "Rush".

could have easily cost us some goals. Man U did manage to score some freekicks because the opposition are assuming the referee will blow for freekick, but Man U players just went ahead to kick and the goals are awarded. U play to whistle.

The worst that can happen is, the referee blow the whistle, pull the ball back and restart or something - always better than concede a goal / penalty.

On the contrary I thot the ref had a good game. He kept the flow of the game and played the advantage when the opportunity arose. He did the same for Singapore at the final third of the Malaysian half when one of the Singapore players was adjudged to have been fouled but he allowed play to continue when the ball fell kindly to Duric. When Duric lost possession, the advantage was deemed lost and he blew the whistle for a Singapore free kick.

Avram should have kicked the guilty players instead of taking it out on the ref. Having said that, Avram without doubt is one of the better coaches in this part of the world. He will not be short of admirers if he decides to leave the Singapore camp.
