SINGAPORE: Former Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo has decided he will not run for the Elected Presidency.

In a posting on his Facebook page a short while ago (at 9.51pm), Mr Yeo said "after considering all factors, I have come to the conclusion that, in this phase of my life, I can better contribute to the Singapore we all love in other ways. I have therefore decided not to run for the Presidency this August."

Mr Yeo said over the past few weeks, many Singaporeans have urged him to run for the Presidency.

He said this is a major step which he could not rush into.

He thought long and hard over it, consulting not only colleagues, friends and family members, but also taking in the advice and views which many conveyed to him in person.

Mr Yeo said it is not a decision he took lightly.

He said many will be disappointed with the decision but asked for their understanding.

Mr Yeo said he will continue to work with them "to make Singapore a home rich in memories and full of hope for the future."

He also expressed his deep appreciation to all who believe in him and offered him their kind support.

Good move by Georgie to declare to the nation that he's not running....

Now Prataman must follow Georgie's move too, for the greater good of this country.

Both know they won't win. GY doesn't want to go down in history as a loser twice within 2 mths. Prataman knows he will lose deposit. Both were acting on self-interest. Period.

Very zhun! GY arguably has a fighting chance to get back his deposit but Prataman stands to lose everything including his jealously-guarded legacy of 12 years being the unelected President!:rolleyes:

Well, George Yeo prayed for wisdom and received it. I remain positive that he will focus his contributions in more meaningful ways.

A number of people I spoke with shared that they believe George Yeo would have won if he had stood for the Presidency Election. That is my opinion too.

He would have been good for Singapore. More than most of the appointed Past Presidents who were gracious and picturesque, George Yeo is in addition, competent. Competent to fulfill the executive demands of the job which may not be present in the past.

It is my belief that George Yeo is not concerned about the possibility of losing a second time. His loss in Aljunid is not an indictment on him. Rather it is an indictment on the PAP and their policies. Fill the Aljunid team with LKY, LHL, GCT, Jayakumar and they may not win either.

George Yeo does not appear to me to be a person who will be devastated even if he lost in the PE. So ashamed of being the man who stood and lost twice that he will no longer show his face. Maybe the psyche of some here if they were ever to lose twice in any of their endeavours. But not him. However his chances of winning are extremely high.

Well, Mr Yeo, you prayed for wisdom and you got your answer. All the best to you, even if all you want to do henceforth is tending orchids, keeping kois and making pratas.

This speaks volumes. Can anyone who is so indecisive or flip-flops be a good president? I am beginning to question all those statements that he was a great minister.

Mr George Yeo, I commend you for making the right move in NOT standing for the forthcoming Presidential Elections.
As Foriegn Minister, you have done many good things which placed Singapore in the international arena. You have, in that capacity, also out-shone many PAP leaders, who still lack that international-celebrity status.
You are close to 60 years. Your children are young. Please spend more time with them and the projects that you are working with - Nalanda, etc... This will give you more quality time and your children and family would be happy
I admire you as a Christian who still has high respects for Buddhism. If that is the case, you would be also be respectful of all other religions. This gives you top qualities as a President but the hurdles you have to overcome in holding such a position are many. So, I once again repeat, "Just stay far from that office".
May the Lord God bless you and your family.

It's the only move he can make....

And i will honestly love to see Prataman re-running and see how he will fare against the rest of the candidates. If he's man enuff, he shld take on the challenge.

Absolutely no surprise here. He did the right thing! :p

From a fan of GY,
MCH

don't be fooled by this PAP ploy.................

how can a USELESS FARK-TURD who can't even be an MP be allowed by PAP to be president ???!!!

it's just a PAP ploy to make people think George Yeo is gracious enough to back down and step down..............

George Yeo is only as useful as a table or chair to LKY....................totally disposable !

I don't think it has anything to do with religion. He needs guidance and instead of praying to the LTK/CST deities, he prayed to God. It is his personal choice and he was just stating what he will do.

As to his consideration, he was probably asked, was reluctant and said he will think about it.

His decision is way ahead of the election, thus giving the PAP time to find another candidate and promote him/her. So did not tease anybody's cock in this respect.

Btw, there is no reason why the President cannot be a female. Ho Ching, Lim Hwee Hua, Lily Neo, Grace Fu and Irene Ng are choices, not necessary good but choices nonetheless.

Thank God, he is not running, else he will be a man who cannot keep his word then how to be President ?
Sometime, it is wiser not to burn bridge too early, he should not have shut that option during Aljunied election.
