SINGAPORE : Former Non-Constituency MP Steve Chia has said the Singapore electorate should expect more three-cornered fights in future elections.

He said this will be quite common as more political parties get registered.

Mr Chia, who is 41 years old, said he is contesting in the single ward of Pioneer and has been actively doing house visits for the last two months.

He spends six days a week meeting residents in Pioneer.

Mr Chia, who is from the National Solidarity Party, said he is confident about his chances, even though there is likely to be a three-cornered fight, with the Reform Party also showing interest.

He said he has also invested a lot of time, energy and money in the constituency.

Mr Chia also welcomes the likelihood that incumbent MP from the People's Action Party, Cedric Foo, will contest in Pioneer.

He added: "I have given them (residents) the assurance that when I am elected, I will have Meet-The-People sessions on every weekday. I have also given them my contact number and if they have any issues with any of the constituency, problems with their HDB blocks, they can call me up, and I will go and see them to understand what are the issues and how to resolve the problems."

Hey All,

Nice to see the forum has had a facelift. I just heard Singapore is going to have the elections soon. This is great news for for those that desire a real change in the political spectrum in SG.

By reading all the posts here, I have not seen any Opposition parties come up with a ballsy offer of money in return for the votes from the constituencies they are contesting in. The PAP has given out money, I hear, as it usually does in its election vote buying habit.

Can't the Opposition promise, say, a $5 to 10 discount on S&C charges in their wards when they get elected? That translates into $60 to 120 a year or $300 to 600 for the 5 years they are in power at that constituency with no change in standards of upkeep and maintenance in the area. The money saved can go to paying ever escalating utility bills. This is on top of the freebies the PAP doles out. The PAP will be hard pressed not to match this and the Opposition can thus show that real savings can be returned to residents and not "invested" in some money losing scam.

Sgeans will listen when it comes to money and how it would affect them, play the money politics card too. Nothing to lose but everything to gain. If the PAP matches this, then up the ante I am sure those Opposition parties which already run Town Councils know how much it would cost to break even for contractors to do the job and what would be a profitable bid.

I just think in the end it works out best for the people. Just saying...

Cheers,

MM
