Malaysian teen gang-raped in London; seven Russians arrested

LONDON: A Malaysian student was allegedly drugged and raped in a London college by seven Russian men, including an intelligence officer, who have been arrested, reported a British newspaper.

According to The Sun daily, the teenage girl, who is studying at the prestigious Bellerbys College in Greenwich, South London, was at a party on Jan 23 with other English-language students when she was drugged and assaulted by the seven men.

As they raped the 18-year-old in succession, they filmed the attack on iPhones. The footage was retrieved by police when they arrested the men later.

'The incident was horrific,' the newspaper quoted a source as saying. 'Mobile phone footage has been recovered that clearly shows the girl to be under the influence of drugs.'

The victim reportedly raised the alarm after staggering into a friend's room. 'She is distraught. She is very young and it is believed she was given a drug before being defiled,' said the source.

Four men have been charged with the assault, including intelligence officer Oleg Vladimirvich Ivanov, 23. All four were aged between 22 and 26.

Appearing at Woolwich Magistrates Court last Wednesday, they claimed to be students, but the Sun reported well-informed sources as saying that Ivanov was working in the Intelligence Section of the Moscow Police.

He was said to have been in Britain for only a week, and had reportedly told other students that he planned to attend university there. The Sun quoted a source as saying: 'He was quite up front for someone working in intelligence.'

The four men, who have been remanded in custody, claimed trial and are due to appear in court tomorrow.

Two other Russians were arrested and are out on bail, and a seventh was held and released without charge.

Malaysian newspaper The Star contacted two students at the college, but they did not want to talk about the attack.

'What we know so far is what everyone has read in the newspaper. We refuse to talk about the case as we are not allowed to,' one of them was quoted as saying.

Officials at the college could not be reached for comment.
