SAF and Chinese army in joint exercise

<!-- by line -->By Lester Kok

THE Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) began a joint counter-terrorism exercise with China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) here on Thursday.
Cooperation 2010, the second exercise of its kind by the two nations, has 120 personnel from both armies taking part in response drills, exercises on military planning, and seminars.
The focus of the nine-day exercise will be on counter-terrorism security operations for major international events. Both sides will share their experiences in staging large-scale events such as the Beijing Olympics 2008 and this year's Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
The first such exercise - in June last year - was in Guilin, Guangxi province.
Representing Singapore in this exercise are personnel from the 2nd People's Defence Force (2PDF), Headquarters 1st Singapore Infantry Brigade, the SAF Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Explosive Defence Group, the Medical Response Force, and the Military Police Command.
From China, personnel from the PLA Headquarters, Beijing Garrison and Beijing Military Command, along with its Chemical Defence Regiment, are involved in the exercise at Clementi Camp.
At the opening ceremony yesterday, Brigadier-General Teo Jing Siong, 2PDF's commander, recognised China's potential to contribute to regional security, saying: 'Singapore welcomes China's continued defence exchanges and interactions with our region at the bilateral and multilateral levels, which would help foster cooperation and better understanding between regional militaries.'
China has been in joint training exercises with other countries in the region, such as Australia and Thailand. Engaging the PLA in such interactions could help build bilateral relations with China and cooperation among these countries.
The 'live-fire' exercise between the Royal Australian Navy and the Chinese navy in September was one of the most complex ever carried out with the latter. During the exercise, ships from both forces fired live rounds at set targets out at sea.

PAP has always had strong links with the CCP. If it took a trivial joint exercise for you to figure it out, I think you're pretty slow. It's also not such a well-kept secret that we are close with the Israelis despite being in a sea of Muslim neighbours. Both links have been useful to us. Say what you want about the PAP but when it comes to diplomacy and foreign relations they've played it ruthlessly pragmatic.

Singapore is close to China now, yes, but it has got no independent foreign policy, it mirrors that of the US. Should China go to war with Japan over the disputed island chain, I am quite sure our government, like US, will be on the side of Japan...

Wrong. You obviously don't know a thing about Singaporean foreign policy. We have always and will always pursue a strict policy of non-alignment to any ONE major power. We carry the balls of everyone equally as much as possible. We've been smart enough not to put our eggs in one basket.

Take Taiwan. Have we ever tried to take a stand on it? Not really. We maintain good relations in Taiwan and you'd call that siding with US. But our balls shrank when China scolded LHL for visiting Taiwan years ago. Our policy is to spread the ass-kissing around the major powers. See how countries that parroted US policies on everything in the past are now paying the price of being shunned by China. We've played it well.

Pappies are not exactly commies,no.

they are chameleon!

That I have to agree, during the 1970's, they were 'shoutin' "COMMIES GO HOME"....remember Bank of China, Battery Road, used to hang the huge banner outside the buidling " The East is RED" in Chinese?, and the display of MZD etc in the bank's lobby...and there were rumbling of closing down B O C...

Then, 'two legs bad, four legs good'...now any legs will do...we embrace our commies brethern..afterall we are Chinese...when we have money..we are all brothers...

tian xia siong de....!!

Yes, the foreign policy is spelt out very clearly, but we have an irresistible affinity with money ( this is in the genes), it it hard to notice that, the smell of money lures us, and even it is an entirely 'black cat', we will say with a straight face, IT IS WHITE. For the money is simply too much not to lie...but we are not alingning...just cuddling up!
